VICTORIA – Themis Security Services Ltd. has one mission: Keeping residents and businesses in Greater Victoria and Duncan safe.
The community patrol service program has been a core service offering since Themis Security was started in 2010 by the company President Mirko Filipovic.
“We were the first security company to bring groups of property owners, business owners and tenants to improve the safety and security of those that live and work in a particular neighbourhood,” states Filipovic. “The idea is that as a group and as a collective, they could achieve greater success as opposed to everyone doing their own thing. By pooling resources, a neighbourhood or a block is able to achieve greater success and enhance their safety and security.”
The program is the most successful and re-warding one that Themis Security offers.
“Our clients can expect and rely on a service that is professional, effective and consistent,” he says. “When clients call us to address any number of issues that currently plague our streets, they can expect that our security personnel will respond in a timely manner. A prime example of this is our community patrol for Townline at Hudson District.”
Themis Security also offers uniformed and plain clothed security officers, mobile patrols, alarm response, remote video security monitoring and guest service officers. Their security personnel and customer service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Community patrols, which is performed by foot patrol is a cost-effective alternative to on-site security service. It is an effective method of prevention, detection and deterrence. The officers respond to alarm calls and remove individuals that are trespassing or loitering. They also check doors and windows and perform lock/unlock duties, and escort staff to and from their office or vehicles.
“We have, to a degree, assumed some of the non-core policing duties,” says Filipovic. “On a daily basis, we deal with trespassing, loitering, theft and wellness checks. By being responsive and having one of the fastest response times has set us apart from our competitors.”
Themis Security approaches safety and security with a goal of reducing the risk and liability for new developments or existing property.
Themis Security has grown consistently since the COVID pandemic.
“We experienced an unexpected surge in growth as the need for security peaked during COVID,” he states. “Post-COVID, we have continued on pretty much the same trajectory, and have had consistent growth over the last two years.”
Filipovic has over 25 years of experience in law enforcement and security and has an extensive network in the local community.
During the Olympics, he was head of security for Alberta House and the Alberta Pavilion. He brought that experience to Victoria to set up Themis Security. He looks after business development and marketing strategy at their 775 Market Street head office.
Filipovic says the company has been first in a number of ways.
“Themis Security was the first security company in Victoria to implement body armour and body worn cameras,” he notes. “We were also the first security company to have paid sick days for employees. We are also the first to carry fire extinguishers in our patrol vehicles, and first security company in BC to be a certified Living Wage Employer.”
Filipovic is proud of that.
“We compensate our staff at a fair wage,” he notes. “We deliver on our promises to our clients, and we protect their business and their staff.”
