VICTORIA – Seaspan has enlisted the services of Canadian-based robotics company Novarc Technologies Inc. to transform its pipe welding processes with automation technology at Victoria Shipyards.
Novarc’s Spool Welding Robot (SWR) will be used by Seaspan, which is expected to enhance productivity, elevate welder safety and ensure consistent high-quality welds. Novarc specializes in the design and manufacturing of cobots and computer vision AI for automated welding applications.

The collaboration is expected to amplify pipe welding and automation in the maritime industry, and Novarc’s SWR is the world’s first of its kind in pipe welding applications. The SWR employs precise motion control and AI-based algorithms to consistently produce near-flawless welds. Equipped with cutting-edge vision systems, the SWR scans and analyzes weld joints in real-time, ensuring precise alignment and optimal weld quality.

Seaspan’s first investment with Novarc was in 2017.
The SWR eliminates direct exposure to the risks of heat, fumes and physical strain, promoting a safer work environment for Seaspan’s welding team. The SWR also collaborates with human welders, allowing them to focus on critical decision-making while the robot handles repetitive tasks.
