VICTORIA – To kick off the United Way Southern Vancouver Island (UWSVI) annual fundraising campaign, local media personalities will be participating in a Charity Jeopardy taking place at the Bay Centre on Friday, September 16, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Al Ferraby (CFAX 1070), Joe Perkins (CHEK News), Nicole Bentham (Victoria Buzz), and Tammy Hofer (Capital Daily) are the contestants unlocking donations for United Way, while Bruce Williams (Victoria Chamber of Commerce) is the show host and Cliff LeQuesne (100.3 The Q!) the event announcer.
The fun Jeopardy game will be followed by a Block Party organized by United Way on Saturday, September 17, to showcase the non-profits that enrich the local community and provide critical social support to many. The Help A Neighbour Block Party will take place from 11 am to 4 pm on Government Street between Broughton and Courtney. In addition to meeting local charities, entertainment will be available at this family-friendly event launched in partnership with the Downtown Victoria Business Association.
“Last year, we supported close to 63,000 individuals on Southern Vancouver Island to build better lives,” said Victoria Schmid, UWSVI Board Vice-Chair. “When we looked at the numbers, we realized that almost 1 in 6 people in our region is helped by a United Way initiative or funded program. We want to showcase and celebrate those partner agencies transforming lives here on the Island.”
Some of the charities participating in the Block Party include Capital Region Food Share Network, Canadian Mental Health Association, Bridges for Women Society, Moms Stop the Harm, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria Capital Region.
The Charity Jeopardy and the Help A Neighbour Party organized by United Way are free to attend.
