BRITISH COLUMBIA – As Surerus Murphy Joint Venture approaches its 10-year anniversary, one aspect that the organization has to be proud of is the number of women in its ranks, from the field to the office to critical leadership positions.
Surerus Murphy is an energy infrastructure construction company with operations throughout Western Canada and into the USA through its affiliate, WHC. The organization builds pipelines – often in remote and mountainous locations – and facilities – compressor stations, power stations, utility-scale solar farms, and much more – for traditional and renewable energy sectors that move energy through infrastructure to power the economy.

Their work relies upon field resources like welders, heavy equipment operators, environmental specialists, and more. Women populate all these positions, and increasingly so over time. In the field, women work as safety specialists, fleet managers, scheduling assistants, community engagement coordinators and many other positions. Other roles include office positions like accounting and payroll, HR, marketing and communications and other traditional fields that power an organization.
Women sit at the highest level of our organization, including the executive leadership team.
“I have grown my career at Surerus Murphy,” comments Tera Chanasyk, Health and Safety Lead at the Eagle Mountain – Woodfibre Gas Pipeline Project in which the organization is responsible for building a portion of the pipeline near the town of Squamish. “This organization has supported me, facilitating my growth in my health and safety career.”
Surerus Murphy supports professional development and offers staff opportunities for career growth, including development programs designed to enhance the leadership skills of both field and office leaders. The organization also provides educational assistance to employees who pursue continuous work-related knowledge and skill improvement.
“Working here can be challenging,” comments Raquel Jackson, Project Office Manager of the Eagle Mountain – Woodfibre Gas Pipeline Project. “A challenge is good; it means I am always being pushed to a new level and that provides a sense of accomplishment. Even better, though, is that the people I work with are supportive and genuinely kind.”

Strong, robust and sustainable organizations understand that diversity of opinion, diversity of approach and diversity in general create an environment where the best solution for any challenge is considered.
Ten years on and this is where Surerus Murphy thrives – as an organization committed to the growth of its employees, regardless of gender, because this ensures they deliver the best product for their clients.
