WESTSHORE – For some people, a local business is one that is independent and one of a kind. For others, it is locally owned, and may have more than one location. Franchises are often passed over when it comes to the description of “local,” and yet these are run by local business owners who employ people and contribute to our community.
Whatever your personal definition is of local business, shopping in your neighbourhood this holiday season makes a real difference to the vibrancy of our economy. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are Canada’s business backbone. 98% of Canadian businesses have fewer than 100 employees – some a lot fewer. Profitable SMEs are therefore essential to both our economic and social well-being.
And yet with supply chain disruptions, inflation, and the challenge of attracting and keeping workers (to name but a few going concerns), running a profitable business is more challenging for many now than it was before the pandemic. You can show your favourite local businesses your appreciation and support by shopping with them at this time of year. While all times of the year apply, brisk sales in the next two to four weeks are important, especially with the 2024 twist of a Canada Post strike as well as preparing for the recent federal announcement of a “GST holiday.”
