VANCOUVER ISLAND –The construction industry has faced innumerable challenges over the last three years including a pandemic, increased material and labour costs, supply chain issues; shipping challenges; increased business taxes and labour shortages.

However, that didn’t stop local construction group Banyan Group of Companies Ltd. from achieving 5th place out of 430 qualifying companies on the Globe and Mail’s 2022 list of Canada’s Top Growing Companies.

“We, at Banyan are honoured to be ranked as the 5th on Globe and Mail’s 2022 Top Growing Companies in Canada,” said Dean Steffins and Kristin Tangen Steffins, Managing Partners at Banyan.

“We want to thank our incredible team for making this vision a reality through hard work, dedication, professionalism, and true team spirit. We look forward to growing together in the future.”

Banyan Group of Companies Ltd. is a suite of family run commercial construction companies located in Victoria, BC, serving the Southern Vancouver Island and includes Banyan Construction Ltd. and Banyan Structural Ltd.

The companies offer an array of services including construction management and general contracting, as well as trade work: concrete form-work, masonry, masonry restoration, shotcrete (structural & shoring), concrete cutting, coring, and sandblasting.

Working in the construction industry comes with many obstacles, but one barrier that has remained consistent in the sector, according to Steffins, is the disconnect between what happens in office and what happens onsite.

“Banyan started as a vision for a construction group based on mutual respect, collaboration, transparency, and teamwork – where everyone’s voice is heard,” said Steffins. “Banyan uses a positive, values-focused approach for operations both internally and extending to liaisons with clients and vendors.”

“We know that working collaboratively within our company, as well as with clients, subcontractors and vendors, results in a more effective project delivery with reduced costs and timelines” notes Steffins.

“We strive for a welcoming, positive environment for our employees, and for each to have an open voice in the company no matter what your role or title,” said Craig Thomas, Chief Operating Officer at Banyan. “We want a team as opposed to the typical hierarchy typecasting found at most corporate companies.”

Beyond culture within the company, the team at Banyan is committed to giving back to the communities in which they operate. Banyan provides free or discounted services to community organizations, supports local charities and sports teams, and sponsors numerous charitable events.

“We are committed to making a difference – in our company and in our communities –finding the right people to share that vision with us as we mature and grow is the driving force of that commitment,” said Steffins.
