VICTORIA – There’s a unique feel at the Inn at Laurel Point, and Victoria’s lone major independent hospitality destination wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Inn has consistently introduced positive change to the property since its purchase in 1982 with the design of the Erickson wing, and becoming the first carbon neutral hotel in BC.

They finished a large renovation to the ground floor and lobby just prior to Covid and have since refreshed the Laurel wing, and will be adding the new Duo Café and Bakery.

“We have a really unique location at the entrance to the inner harbor, with the Coho ferry coming through, and watching the float planes land, although we’re not in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the inner harbor,” adds General Manager Eda Koot.

“We always try to make people feel like they’re staying at home. We put hospitality before business, and sometimes that’s hard to do in this day and age.”

Eda calls Duo and Aura the property’s ‘dynamic duo’, adding that the bakery is going to be a nice addition to the hotel.

“We have a full-on kitchen garden on the property, and we choose some of our dishes based on what we have from the garden,” she states, noting the outdoor patio will be open in May. “Even some of our cocktails are often made from the garden. It’s a pollenator garden that allows us to be creative when we’re putting together our menu for Aura. It’s kind of fun.”

Eda has been at the Inn at Laurel Point Inn since September 2021.

“It’s probably been the most unique hotel I’ve been at,” she says. “It feels more residential – it certainly isn’t corporate or cookie cutter, although we have a lot of business and conference clients,” she says, adding they will host over 40 weddings this year at the full service property, which includes a pool, fitness centre and conference rooms.

“I really enjoy the Island, and I love living here,” she says. “It is a unique community feel, and it has that family feeling, but it’s also a very collaborative environment to be in. We recently went to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal with other managers from properties in Victoria promoting the area as a destination. That demonstrates the positive attitude within the region.”
