SIDNEY – The best coastal rowers in the world will be churning up the waters off Sidney, BC, as the community hosts the 2018 World Rowing Coastal Championships. The competition will take place along the shores of the Salish Sea between October 11th to 14th.
The event Organizing Committee, which includes several Olympic medalists, has worked with the Town of Sidney to secure use of Tulista and Lochside Parks as the location for the Championships, ensuring a beach start for the first time ever at this international competition. The successful bid also takes advantage of the community’s walkability, the venue’s close proximity to local hotels, meeting space and other amenities.
Sidney Mayor Steve Price commented; “We are excited that The World Rowing Federation (FISA) has chosen Sidney as the venue for the 2018 World Rowing Coastal Championships. Our community has an outstanding, proven record of successfully hosting major events and we look forward to working with the Organizing Committee to welcome the athletes, their support teams and spectators to our community.
“Town staff, local community organizations, local businesses, and a passionate volunteer base will support this event and ensure it is the best ever and that we make Canada proud”.
The community of Sidney is located on the Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island. It is a year-round tourist destination known for its pristine waterfront. It is located just 27 km (17 miles) north of the beautiful Capital City of Victoria, British Columbia.
It is also conveniently situated a short 10-minute drive from the Victoria International Airport and Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, with the Washington State Ferry Terminal from Anacortes located next to the event venue.
The Championships are expected to attract hundreds of participants from around the world. Organizers hope to have large crowds to welcome the world’s best in coastal rowing. Free access to the site will be provided for spectators.
