LADYSMITH – A lot has changed in the home renovation and construction industry and we have more options than ever when choosing materials to create our dream spaces. However, some methods will always stand the test of time.
“Some of the new techniques and products available these days make things way more efficient, more high performance, it has evolved a lot in the last 15 years but even a lot in the last five years,” said Ian Wyndlow, owner of Liquid Stone Studios in Ladysmith, BC.
“Although there are tons of new methods and materials to play with, I think our success comes from our work ethic, old school mentality and commitment to our main material: concrete.”
Since 2005, Liquid Stone Studios has been perfecting the art of crafting the finest, pre-cast and decorative glass-fiber reinforced concrete products, including countertops, vanities, fireplace surrounds, sinks and architectural hard surfaces for homes and businesses.
As the company founder, Wyndlow has trained under the leaders and mavericks in the industry, including Cheng Design, Gore Design and The Concrete Countertop Institute. He constantly looks for new inspiration, most recently by attending a conference in California which was an opportunity to network with his peers and try new techniques.
The creations made by the company are beautiful additions to a room or even the focal point of a living space. Wyndlow has built a reputation creating timeless, memorable concrete-focused pieces that live on in client’s homes or businesses for decades and become a defining feature of the property. Each new piece tells a story in the company’s wide-ranging portfolio.
“A big selling point of what I do is the custom aspect, it is very unique,” says Wyndlow. “I like working in the third dimension and concrete is so versatile, lending itself to various finishes and personal inlays, for example, so some of my pro-jects are not just a rectangular shape, but I also like adding some relief, or texture in some of our jobs.”
“Also, people like having a unique, custom contribution to their home, it adds character, brings life and personality to a space rather than having cut-and-dry components. We spend so much of our time at home, it only makes sense that we would want to specialize it and make it our own.”
As the sole operator of the company, Wyndlow takes great pride in his work, and feels a special sense of responsibility, especially when clients with high-end, multi-million-dollar homes put their trust in him to create a special piece that could come to define their space.
“I have had many years of repeat customers, which has kept me busy throughout my career,” said Wyndlow. “It gives me pleasure to know my creations are living on in the special spaces people have in their homes and where they create new memories.”
When it comes to his success, Wyndlow believes the commitment to his craft is what keeps his business bustling.
“What I have noticed is the attention to detail I put in my work is reflected in my client’s reactions,” said Wyndlow. “I really fuss about my work; I really am particular, and it is very high quality. When someone has a vision and I am tasked with bringing it to life, I pour all my effort into doing it right, doing it on budget and to the highest standards.”
