INDEPENDENT RETAILER MONTH: CELEBRATING LOCAL BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY FUTURES’ SUPPORT FOR THEIR SUCCESS

July 24, 2025

WENDY MCCULLOCH

BRITISH COLUMBIA – Every July, Independent Retailer Month highlights the locally owned businesses that are the backbone of British Columbia’s communities and economy. From clothing boutiques and bookstores to hardware shops and specialty grocers, these independent retailers help define the character of our neighbourhoods while playing a vital role in job creation and local investment.

The importance of independent retailers to the provincial economy cannot be overstated. According to Statistics Canada, small businesses (those with fewer than 100 employees) account for 98% of all businesses in British Columbia. Retail trade is one of the top industries within this sector, employing tens of thousands across the province. When consumers choose to support independent businesses, they’re not only getting personalized service and unique products, they’re helping to sustain jobs, fund local infrastructure through taxes, and keep profits circulating within the community.

But while the contributions of small and medium-sized businesses are significant, the challenges they face, from economic uncertainty and rising costs to competition from big box stores and online retailers, are just as real. That’s where Community Futures British Columbia steps in.

Supporting Local Business Growth and Sustainability

Community Futures is a province-wide network of 34 community-based offices, each dedicated to supporting rural and remote communities through business development services. Helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) start, grow, and succeed.

Through hands-on support, Community Futures helps retailers build stronger, more resilient businesses. Services include:

  • Financing: Access to flexible, affordable loans that are often unavailable through traditional lenders. These funds can help cover everything from inventory to renovations to hiring.
  • Business Planning & Coaching: From initial idea to execution, advisors work one-on-one with entrepreneurs to develop practical business plans and growth strategies.
  • Workshops and Webinars: Online sessions tailored to the needs of small business owners, covering topics like digital marketing, financial literacy, and customer service.
  • Consulting: One-on-one business guidance from business experts.
  • Succession Planning: Assistance for business owners preparing to transition or sell their business, ensuring long-term viability and community continuity.
  • Export & Market Expansion Support: Programs like Export Navigator help businesses explore new markets, diversify revenue streams, and grow beyond their immediate region.

What makes Community Futures distinct is its grassroots approach. Each office is staffed by people who live in and understand their local area, offering customized guidance based on the unique challenges and opportunities in each community.

Independent Retailers Are Essential to Local Economies

Independent Retailer Month serves as an important reminder of how vital local businesses are to economic and community well-being. Small businesses in the retail sector help keep dollars circulating locally, support community causes, and provide essential goods and services. They also serve as training grounds for young workers and are often pioneers in innovation and sustainability.

In regions across B.C., Community Futures has helped independent retailers not only stay open through difficult times, but also pivot to new models, such as e-commerce, delivery services, and digital marketing. This adaptability has proven critical in helping businesses stay relevant and competitive in a changing retail landscape.

A Call to Action for Consumers and Business Owners

This July, Community Futures is encouraging both consumers and business owners to get involved in Independent Retailer Month. For consumers, that means choosing to shop locally whenever possible.
