VICTORIA — With nearly two decades of experience in real estate, Jane Johnston, CEO of The Briar Hill Group at RE/MAX Camosun, brings more than just market expertise to the table—she brings heart, strategy, and a deep commitment to building community.

“There’s a big shift that happens between being a new agent and being one 20 years in,” Johnston explains. “Early on, you focus on learning the ropes and growing your income. But over time, it becomes about understanding people’s needs and helping build stronger communities, one home at a time.”

Johnston’s career began in 2006, following a successful teaching career at both the high school and university levels. Her transition into real estate was swift and impactful—earning Rookie of the Year and top producer at Victoria’s largest brokerage. Since joining RE/MAX in 2015, her drive and dedication have only accelerated. By 2021, she was the top agent at RE/MAX Camosun, and in 2022, she led all RE/MAX agents across Greater Victoria. In 2023, she formed a top-producing team ranked in RE/MAX Canada’s Top 50.

While her accolades are impressive, Johnston’s true focus lies in her consultative approach.

“Before we talk about houses, we talk about lifestyle,” she says. “We take the time to learn what matters most—school catchments, commute times, outdoor access, and the sense of connection a client is looking for. Then we match them with communities that truly align—even if it’s not where they initially thought they’d land.”

This personalized strategy has resonated especially with newcomers and out-of-province buyers, many of whom begin their home search in popular neighbourhoods like James Bay or Fairfield. Johnston gently encourages them to consider the broader landscape, guiding them toward communities that better reflect their values and day-to-day needs—including school choice, access to transportation, and overall lifestyle.

Her commitment to long-term community planning has become even more vital in the post-pandemic market. “Now more than ever, it’s essential to stay grounded in advocacy, strategy, and adapting quickly to change.”

As Canada continues to welcome new residents from across the country and around the globe, Johnston sees opportunity—and responsibility. “We need net migration to grow as a country. But with that comes the need for thoughtful community development,” she says. “Our market on Southern Vancouver Island is incredibly nuanced. Developers often miss the mark on what’s needed, and that’s where experienced, community-focused agents can make a real difference. For example, we are seeing more seniors coming to the island who have different housing needs than young families.”

At the heart of Johnston’s success is her small, dynamic team—hand-selected for their professionalism, empathy, and shared values.

“We run like a high-performance crew boat,” she says. “Everyone has their position, and we move forward in sync.”

She’s proud to foster a culture of mentorship within her group, helping newer agents grow into their strengths while ensuring every client receives personalized service. Her background in education still informs how she leads, coaches, and supports those around her. That same level of focus and care applies to how she negotiates.

“A lot of people think real estate is about charm and hustle, but it’s really about preparation and protection,” she explains. “I advocate fiercely for my clients while staying calm, informed, and respectful. That’s how we get results—and why clients refer their friends and family.”

Beyond her real estate practice, Johnston is a deeply engaged member of the Victoria community. She rows with the Gorge Narrows Rowing Club, serves on the board of Habitat for Humanity, and supports a variety of local causes, including the BC Cancer Foundation, the Victoria Hospital Foundation, and the Children’s Miracle Network.

Whether guiding clients to the right neighbourhood or advocating for intentional development, Johnston remains focused on what matters most: creating community, one home at a time.
