“We’ve spent the last eight years there, and we are now moving into phases four and five over the next couple of years,” states Sims. “I’ve completed masonry on every single house there with CBS Stoneworks works with a wide variety of products. For example, brick is ideal for heritage storefronts, chimneys and fireplaces, and veneer for pillars, front entrances and house exteriors. Stone is perfect for rock walls, support walls and to enhance curb appeal.”

On the ground, there’s concrete, flag stone, pavers and slate for indoor and outdoor projects.

CBS Stoneworks has won numerous Torch Awards from the Better Business Bureau of Vancouver Island, including being named the Masonry Company of the Year for 2016, and 2017 and most recently 2021, and they were also finalists in 2018 and 2019. CBS is the only company to win the award three times.

Sims says they’ll do any job size, and one of their favorites was the Centennial United Church on David Street in downtown Victoria. Sims is proud that his firm was selected from a panel of four masonry companies to do the work on the 130 year old building.

“It was meant to be a five week job but it turned into three months,” he recalls. “There was structural work needing to be completed before any masonry work was completed. It was a tedious and tricky job, but the end result gave us a great sense of accomplishment. We worked with the Heritage Department and the church congregation.”

Born and raised in England, Sims moved to Canada at age 12 to Ontario, moved to Victoria when he was 16, back to England at age 18 where he graduated from high school and entered a bricklaying and stone masonry apprenticeship.

He moved back to Victoria in 2006 and worked for his father Charlie Sims, owner of CBS Masonry. He honed his craft under his father’s mentorship, and launched out on his own to start CBS Stoneworks 13 years ago.

Sims loves the business.

A new home sporting the handiwork of CBS Stoneworks

“Every day is a new challenge, as we don’t perform the same job or task all the time,” he says. “We do everything from stonework to brick to rock to concrete to pavers to stone veneer. We’re learning new things every single day, with new tricks of the trade.”

Playing soccer is Sims’ favourite thing to do in his down time, and he sponsors several local soccer teams, including Victoria’s professional Pacific FC club. An enormous Manchester United fan, he literally travels the world to see his favourite English Premier League club take the pitch,

The keys to the company’s success is the team’s comradery and commitment to quality, as well as clear communication with customers and staff.

“Customer relations is a huge part of CBS Stoneworks and we connect very well with our customers,” he states. “Quality is our guarantee. That is what CBS Stoneworks prides ourselves on, from every job we complete, from small too big.”
