Comox, BC, October, 2024 – 40 Knots Vineyard & Estate Winery has announced that it has earned two prestigious sustainability certifications: the Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle Certification and the BC Green Business Certification. These achievements join the winery’s Platinum Certification with Green Step Sustainable Tourism and its recognition through the 2024 BC Tourism Sustainability Award.
The Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle Certification is awarded to businesses that excel in sustainable practices across environmental, social, and economic pillars. Developed by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) and aligned with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this certification acknowledges 40 Knots’ holistic commitment to sustainability. By achieving this certification, 40 Knots continues to reduce its carbon footprint, support local communities, and implement eco-friendly practices.
“This recognition is incredibly meaningful to us because it reflects the heart of what we do,” said Brenda Hetman-Craig, Co-owner of 40 Knots Winery. “We’ve always believed that sustainability is more than just environmental practices. It’s about supporting our community, providing meaningful employment, and ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same beautiful surroundings we do today.”
The BC Green Business Certification, awarded at the highest “Green” level, further affirms 40 Knots’ leadership in sustainability. The winery undergoes annual evaluations to measure its progress and implement ongoing improvements. This certification connects 40 Knots with over 200 other businesses across the province working towards a greener future.
“Sustainability is woven into the fabric of our business,” said Layne Robert Craig, Co-owner of 40 Knots Winery. “These certifications not only validate our efforts but also push us to keep striving for new ways to be better stewards of the land. We’re proud to be part of a community of businesses that care about making a real difference for the planet.”
In addition, 40 Knots has maintained its Platinum Certification with Green Step Sustainable Tourism for eight years. 40 Knots was the 2nd in Canada to receive this recognition and is now among only eight businesses to have achieved this status. This certification is based on a rigorous assessment that measures 40 Knots’ adherence to sustainability criteria established by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, which involves a third-party independent audit to achieve this global recognition.
“At 40 Knots, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a responsibility,” added Brenda Hetman-Craig. “We’ve built our winery on the belief that businesses have the power to make meaningful change, and we’re thrilled to be recognized for the steps we’re taking.”
