NANAIMO – Immerse yourself in art, dance, and culture this summer! Crimson Coast Dance presents the 22nd Annual InFrinGinG Dance Festival, July 10 to 19th! Get outside and ignite a sense of togetherness, while physically distanced, at DRIVE-IN and WALK-IN performances, off and online. We invite you to join us to watch, listen, move your body, and be inspired by film, live dance and music, online conversations with guest artists and more.

Through mindful application and approval of Health Authority guidelines, our artist, crew and support team create a container of safety for evocative and innovative performing arts experiences while taking the lid off your imagination!

Nanaimo’s dance festival opens, July 10, with a mixed program titled, A Celebration of Land, Culture and Lives That Matter.  The evening presents; Body Talk HiP HoP PoW WoW, an inspirational show celebrating culture, youth and artistry. Feature performers, SirrealEcko Aleck and AJ Megaman, rap and dance it out from across the stage! Tstatassaya White and Dustin Anderson offer a film of First Nation families songs, dances and crafts that reveal a story by late, elder, Ellen White, The Boys Who Turned Into A Whale. The evening mix is topped off with the pulsing beat of African dance and drum by The African Village Experience, an initiative of Jacky Essombe.

DRIVE-IN LIVE performances, UNTITLEdISTANCE and Immigrant Lessons, take on themes of togetherness, aging, love. These artists originally from Iran, Sweden, India, Philippines, Ghana, Korea, Mexico, Jamaica, Goa, ask; How we sift away the debris from generations ago? How do we stand in the truths of the way history affects us in the present? How do we hold space for one another as we peel back the layers of inherited traumas? How do we coexist?  Organize your bubble of friends and family into your most comfortable ride for these evenings that invite reflection on humanity, July 11 and 12.

July 11, 17 or 18, gather your children to a family DRIVE-IN MOVIE night. Backyard dances – director’s cut – offers clips of families dancing together as edited by former Purple Pirate, Dustin Anderson. Sign up online to participate!.  Then embark on an animated, cinematic, journey, Feathers of Fire, a Persian myth brought to life by Hamid Rahamian.

July 13 to 16, take your festival experience online! Participate in extraordinary, digital, dance and conversations at DIGITAL REALITY, our online festival component.  Learn what AR, VR and MR mean in the Digital Dance world. Have your say in how they shape Nanaimo’s dance scene.  Then, on the 16th, go outside again to ground yourself in a stunning presentation by Genevieve Johnson in a field of wheat…because we must always return to the earth.

A guest festival within a festival: We are pleased to announce the launch of a new series, DIFFUSION: MicroFEST!  by locals; Samantha LetourneauApril Laurie and Nadine Wiepning. Small shows for small audiences where safely distanced live performance sans the technical encumbrance of the theatre, are featured. InFrinGinG presents its premiere run, as a series of three original performances by Wiepning, Letourneau, Laurie, Myriam VerzatIsabel Ford, and, of course, the Galactic Butterfly, eg/ Dave Read and Valentina Cardinalli, July 17 and 18.

Closing Night, July 19, invites you to synchronize the city within you and the one you live in by signing up for Synchon-I-City, a fun, collaborative audio adventure tour requiring a sense of excitement and curiosity as you embrace the unknown!  An initiative of Myriam Verzat and Valerie Mermet.

Then meet us at the secret location, don your sanitized headphones and dance in your own bubble to the timing of DJ And Friends while embraced by the magic of building video mapping artist, Kris Vieaux. And say goodnight to InFrinGinG 2020 til next year!

VERY LIMITED TICKETS: The ‘How To’ Corona Shuffle: Because the health and safety of our community is our highest priority we have strict and specific, VIHA approved, guidelines for attendance for each event. These guidelines are on our website and accompany each registration form.  Choose your event, Register online, Location is sent separately, Rave style, on the day of the selected event.
