Woodland Flooring & Millwork Marks 25 Years By Adding New Products
COMOX – For the past 25 years, Steve Roscoe and his team at Woodland Flooring & Millwork have been producing top quality wood flooring for customers who love real wood.
Business is literally looking up, as the award winning company is adding custom solid wood and butcher block countertops to the list of flooring products it creates.
“Countertops & Island Tops are a natural addition and we’re working with the same woods, finishes and customers,” owner Steve Roscoe states. “Natural wood offers a nice balance against granite, quartz or other solid surfaces and they work well together. We’re seeing more people wanting countertops with wood. It has an organic feel, it’s warm to the touch, and it becomes a feature element when you put it into the kitchen.”
Roscoe says when he started the company, his dream was to create a heritage business making custom and unique products with sustainable West Coast woods, most notably Douglas Fir, Red Alder and Pacific Maple. In the beginning, most of their customers were off-island and in resort communities like Whistler and The Gulf Island and across the line in the USA.
“Initially we were travelling a lot to serve clients,” he recalls. “But something magical happened during Covid, people seemed to wake up to where many products were coming from, as the global supply chain collapsed. When they realized that products were being made with Russian wood and manufactured in China, plus the cost of all freight that went crazy, customers started looking for more locally sourced products.”
“We have a lot more like-minded individuals that now think the way we did 25 years ago,” he notes. “A lot of people come in and say ‘thank you’ for being here and doing this.”
Also, Woodland is the Canadian importer for Saicos wood finishes from Germany, which supplies organic, plant-based oil and wax-based finishes for the wood industry through-out the world. “We chose these finishes after a few years of being exposed to the standard finishes which are toxic to handle. It was just pennies more per square foot to use good quality organic finishes, plus It’s spread-rate is 10 times higher than polyurethanes, and that means less containers end up in the landfill,” he states.
It also helps Woodland achieve its goal of sustainability as much as possible, including resurfacing and restoring of existing floors so that little, if anything, is wasted.
“These products allow us to maintain and refresh floors that we installed up to 25 years ago,” he states. “We can maintain them with-out sanding the entire floor down to bare wood, like using polyurethanes. With Saicos, we can do spot finishing, and the floors look as good as new”.
Besides floors and now countertops, Wood-land provides matching wood floor vents, solid stair treads and feature walls to its customers.
“Woodland’s local products are non-toxic, have zero carbon footprint and are designed to last for up to 100 years or more,” – Roscoe notes. “And they are beautiful additions to a healthy home.”
