VIREB Commercial Building Awards Set For April 28

Buildings From The Malahat To Port Hardy To Be Celebrated At Tigh Na Mara in Parksville

NANAIMO – A total of 35 buildings will be vying for top honours at the 15th Annual Vancouver Island Real Estate Board Commercial Building Awards, which will be held in person as a live event April 28 at the Tigh Na Mara Seaside Spa Resort in Parksville.

For the past two years, the event was held virtually due to Covid pandemic restrictions on in-person gatherings.

“It is going to be great to be able to get together and celebrate the great buildings that have been completed in 2021,” says Mark MacDonald of Business Examiner, which coordinates the event. “To have 35 buildings finished during such difficult times is a testament to the skills and commitment of builders and owners, for persevering as they have.”

Gold Sponsors of the Awards are MNP LLP and Coastal Community Credit Union. Category sponsors thus far are RBC Royal Bank, RE/MAX Commercial, NAI Commercial, Herold Engineering, Knappett Projects and Yellow Sheet Review.

To be eligible for the Awards, commercial, industrial and revenue-producing projects, including renovation projects, from the Malahat to Port Hardy must have been completed between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

“Some of the buildings that have entered the competition this year are simply breathtaking,” says MacDonald. “We are really looking forward to having these business leaders in the same room, celebrating their fine work.”

MacDonald expects the event to sell out quickly. Their first in-person event, the Grant Thornton LLP Vancouver Island Business Excellence Awards, held March 17 at the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort in Victoria, sold out two weeks in advance, and attendees were thrilled at the opportunity to celebrate together.

The nomination deadline was at the beginning of March, and a group of four independent judges from real estate related companies and organizations will adjudicate the entries prior to the event.

There will be at least 11 commercial categories:

  • Mixed-Use (commercial/residential)
  • Seniors housing
  • Community institutional
  • Community recreational
  • Retail
  • Industrial
  • Multi-family
  • Hospitality
  • Commercial renovation/restoration
  • Office
  • Green

There will also be a Judges’ Choice Award for the best overall entry. Last year’s winner were the Village on Third project in Nanaimo. Due to the pandemic, winners were announced through a Zoom program, which can be seen HERE.

Last year’s Program listing all of the Finalists can be viewed HERE.

Tickets to the awards are $140 plus GST, and organizers expect this to sell out quickly. Tickets can be purchased through the Business Examiner website HERE.
