TOFINO – The Tofino Wastewater Treatment Plant is now operational, marking the significant effort and collaboration with the local First Nations, the Tofino community and Federal and Provincial Government partners.
The new wastewater treatment plant ensures that Tofino’s sewage is treated responsibly, protecting this unique marine environment for future generations. The project, valued at $79.25 million, is the largest capital project the District of Tofino has ever undertaken and will end the decades-long practice of discharging untreated effluent into the marine environment.
Phase 1 and Phase 2: Construction began in late 2022, covering both phases of the project. Phase 1 included the construction of the treatment facility, which features advanced UV disinfection to ensure all effluent meets stringent federal Wastewater System Effluent Regulations standards. Phase 2 involved upgrading and replacing legacy conveyance infrastructure and installing new pump stations.
Funding and Collaboration: The project was made possible through a joint investment from the Province of British Columbia’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Canada’s Ministry of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, including the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund Program.
Environmental Impact: The plant will dramatically improve water quality in traditional shellfish harvesting areas and critical coastal habitats, aligning with Tofino’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
“Completing the Wastewater Treatment Plant is a transformative moment for our community, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the region. This project reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and the preservation of our precious marine ecosystems. Ending the discharge of untreated effluent protects Tofino’s unique biodiversity and natural beauty for generations to come. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our Federal and Provincial partners, local First Nations, Tofino Council, District staff, project partners, and local residents & businesses. Together, we have taken a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable future for everyone who calls Tofino & Clayoquot Sound home,” said Dan Law, Mayor of the District of Tofino.
