Coastal Community Credit Union Welcomes New Chief Risk Manager

NANAIMO – VI West Coast Softwash of Nanaimo was named the winner of a Better Business Bureau Torch Award for the Exterior Cleaning Services category at the Nov. 4 Gala celebration November 4 at the Union Club in Victoria. Mikus Transport of Nanaimo also won a Torch Award in the Movers Category.

Fawcett Mattress has opened a new Nanaimo location, in the former Arrowsmith Bikes shop, at 4906 Wellington Road. It is in the same plaza as KMS Tools.

Coastal Community Credit Union welcomes Kent Jesse as their new Chief Risk Officer for the organization. Kent arrives from Innovation Credit Union, where he served as Chief Risk Officer. The position is a new one for CCCU, notes President and CEO Adrian Legin.

Jesse joins Legin, Chief Financial Officer Barbara Coe, Chief People & Administration Officer Bruno Dragani, Chief Community & Marketing Officer Joe Cristiano, and Chief Relationship & Sales Officer Rob Grundison on the credit union’s Executive team.

Caged Athletics owner Brady Rogers is pleased to announce they’ve added Caged Athletics Football League for all youth pee wee and bantam athletes, starting Dec. 2 and running each Friday night until January 13 at Arbutus Meadows. Caged Athletics has a state-of-the-art baseball and softball batting cage in south Nanaimo.

Mosaic Forest Management has signed seven access agreements with Search and Rescue organizations on Vancouver Island. The agreements provide important access for training exercises, data-sharing opportunities, and overall support for these organizations dedicated to public safety.

Cannabis company Tilray has announced it is buying the New York brewer Montauk Brewing Company in its bid to expand their alcohol division in the United States. The premium brewer will join Tilray’s roster of alcohol and beverage brands, which include SweetWater Brewing Company, Alpine, Green Flash and Breckenridge Distillery.

Montauk Brewing Company has more than 6,400 distribution points across retailers such as Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Costco and Walmart.

Kool & Child has announced that it is closing on December 24, after 60 years in the business. Kool & Child started in Toronto in 1965, and Morris Kool, son of the company founders, opened their Nanaimo store in 1993 and renamed it Kool and Child. Kool and Child grew to 6,000 square feet of retail space as well as an on-line store which carried a large assortment of educational toys for children of all ages, providing families with a wide variety of resources and puzzles.

A tip of the hat to Granby Bobcat Service for earning a Fortis BC award for going 20 years without ever damaging a gas line. Each year, Fortis BC crews repair about 1,000 third-party damages to natural gas lines. So far, in 2022, repairs from those mishaps have cost more than $2 million dollars and each of those incidents poses danger to the public, according to a Fortis BC press release.

Some exciting new for downtown Ladysmith, as the owners of the Island Hotel at 440 First Avenue have announced plans to give the landmark property a major facelift. Randy Repass and Sally-Christine Rodgers bought the building a year ago and along with AYPQ Architecture, made a presentation at the Eagles Hall November 21 for their plans, which include expanding the facility from its current three storeys to five, and boosting it to 20 residential units from the current 13 at the facility. The ground floor of the revitalized building will be for commercial use.
