NANAIMO – The new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation (NEDC) John Hankins, formally began his duties Monday, January 4.
The NEDC Board of Directors announced November 24 that Hankins had been appointed to the position, which had been vacated by the former CEO Sasha Angus. When the appointment was made Andre Sullivan, the NEDC Board Chair said Hankins’ background was a key factor in his winning the prestigious position.
“We are very excited about working with John, and feel that his blend of private sector and economic development experience will make him a valuable asset for the community. We are pleased such a strong candidate has chosen to join NEDC,” Sullivan stated in a media release at the time.
The search for Angus’ replacement was extensive and required the hiring of an outside recruiting firm. Hankins was viewed as the best candidate as he had extensive economic development and private sector experience, having spent five years as the Vice President of Calgary Economic Development (CED). Since his time with the CED, Hankins has operated a successful international business consulting company, servicing companies seeking new markets both in Canada and abroad.
“I am very excited to be joining NEDC and Tourism Nanaimo to work collectively with our partners to realize many opportunities for the city of Nanaimo” Hankins said. “I was attracted to this position as the board and team of NEDC have a real can-do attitude, and the city and regional district of Nanaimo has such a great energy and envious quality of life.”
