Helijet Helping With Cancer Care Through New Partnership

NANAIMOJake Rudolph, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Nanaimo, has been elected President of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators, at their annual general meeting on June 2.

Carolyn Holmes will arrive from Prince George to become the new Executive Director of the Nanaimo Art Gallery on July 13. Carolyn was previously Executive Director of the Two Rivers Gallery in Prince George. She will take over from Julie Bevan, who became the Manager of Culture and Events at the City of Nanaimo this spring.

Congratulations to Dawn Thomas of Snuneymuxw First Nation, who has been appointed as the new Executive Lead for Indigenous Health at Island Health.

Congratulations to Sandy Clark for starting a new position as Senior Vice President at Royal LePage Coast Capital Commercial Vancouver Island.

Helijet International has formed a partnership with BC Cancer and TForce Logistics to provide patients on Vancouver Island with faster access to Positron Emission Tomography (PET) radioisotopes, a critical component of cancer care. Helijet will transport the PET from Vancouver where it is made to Victoria hospitals where it is used, as it has a half-life of 110 minutes, meaning it decays to less than half its starting amount within two hours.

Up the road in Parksville, a company called Aux Box has been building small, prefabricated self-contained, detached offices that are ideal for people working from home.

Landon Schek co-owns the business, and notes that orders have increased due to the COVID-19 crisis and accompanying self-isolating demands. They make offices in three sizes, and the business is moving to new space in Errington to keep up with increasing demand for their product.

After eight months, renovations/construction on the exterior of the Coast Bastion Hotel have been completed, notes General Manager David McQuinn.

Another ride hailing operation has been approved by the Passenger Transportation Board, as Powell River Taxi Ltd. has been approved to operate in Region 3, which is Vancouver Island outside of the Capital Regional District (Greater Victoria).

Kudos to the Nanaimo Foundation, as Executive Director Laurie Bienert notes that the community organization has announced it will provide $167,310 to support local charities, as part of a new partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, Community Foundations of Canada and United Way Centraide Canada, funded by the Government of Canada’s $350 million Emergency Community Support Fund to help through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Walmart Canada has contracted with Mowi Canada West to offer the first Walmart Canada Fresh Never Frozen program under the Marine Harvest label. It will be delivered to 42 Walmarts across British Columbia.

Congratulations to Nanaimo-based Real Estate Webmasters upon earning the contract to redesign the website of RE/MAX Europe, which includes 26,000 members over 40 countries.

REW President and CEO Morgan Carey is excited about the opportunity, noting it will accommodate 40 languages.
