NANAIMO – On June 2, the Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) announced that the City of Nanaimo won the 2023 Gold Award of Excellence in Policy Planning for City Plan: Nanaimo ReImagined. The strategic plan was created with extensive public input gathered in the midst of the global pandemic.

“I am pleased that City Plan: Nanaimo ReImagined was chosen to receive the Planning Institute of BC’s 2023 Gold Award for Excellence in Policy Planning. Reflecting the ideas and inputs of thousands of people who contributed their time and energy over two years, despite the effects and restrictions of a global pandemic, the plan will guide the City’s decisions for growth, including our future city structure and form, and our social and environmental commitments, for many years to come,” said Leonard Krog, mayor of Nanaimo.

Adopted by City Council July 4, 2022, City Plan: Nanaimo ReImagined provides strategic direction for the coming 25 years on land use, Truth and Reconciliation, climate adaptation, health and wellness, diversity, accessibility and inclusion, economic prosperity, sustainable living, and more. By providing integrated direction, City Plan unifies traditionally separate policy documents and serves as Nanaimo’s Official Community Plan (OCP), Parks, Recreation, Culture, & Wellness Plan, Active Mobility Plan, Transportation Plan, Climate Action & Resiliency Plan and Accessibility & Inclusion Plan.

City Plan includes 35 policy areas, organized around Five City Goals. Each policy area communicates the values that will guide the choices the City will make as Nanaimo grows and evolves. The policies reflect matters of great importance to Nanaimo residents and are based on the values community members expressed through a public engagement process that saw the highest level of engagement by Nanaimo Community members in any City Planning process to date.

The Planning Institute of BC is the professional association of planners in British Columbia and the Yukon and has been dedicated to the advancement of the planning profession for more than 60 years. PIBC is the westernmost affiliate of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) – the national association.
