COMOX VALLEY

The $4 million purchase of 925 Braidwood Ave. by BC homes under the Supportive Housing Fund has been completed. This property is intended to be used for permanent overnight shelters and supportive homes in Courtenay.

Aspen Grove Children’s Centre has recently joined the ranks of Comox Valley child care facilities offering affordable ChildCareBC services at just $10 a day.

The Anderton Nursery Ltd, located at 212 Anderton Rd, Comox is now officially opened.

Comox Valley Search and Rescue has formed a partnership with Land & Sea Brewing Co. in Comox to raise $1.5 million for the construction of a new headquarters.

 

PORT ALBERNI

The McLean Mill 10K is set to make its return to the McLean Mill National Historic Site on April 7th, which marks the seventh event in the Vancouver Island Race Series.

The West Coast Transit service was successfully launched by the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) and its member communities on the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples’ traditional territory on the western coast of Vancouver Island.

The famous Hawaii Martin Mars will find its new home at North Saanich’s BC Aviation Museum in the fall.

Port Alberni Council appointed Sara Darling, Deputy Director of Corporate Services, as Corporate Officer and assigned the responsibility of corporate administration for the City of Port Alberni.


TOFINO – UCLUELET

Roy Henry Vickers was appointed the first Elder-in-Residence of the BC Arts Council.

In partnership with Veritree Official, the Pacific Sands Beach Resort is pleased to announce a new sustainability and nature-friendly initiative for its visitors, as well as a partnership to promote rewilding, reforestation, and nature restoration.

 

PARKSVILLE – QUALICUM BEACH

Four hundred Resort Drive properties in Parksville were exempted by the B.C. government a month before new short-term rental regulations took effect. New rules require short-term rentals to be in an operator’s principal residence, secondary suite, or laneway home starting May 1.

The Town of Qualicum Beach invited proposals for the planning, design and contract administration of the pavement rehabilitation of Runway 29-11 and adjacent taxiways at the Qualicum Beach Airport. Tetra Tech was the successful engineering firm with a proposal of $51,775. There is no construction for this phase of the project, however airside inspection work will start March 11, 2024, and wrap up on June 1, 2024.

NANAIMO

Cathy Mackay

Cathy Mackay assumes the position of chief executive officer of EDI Environmental Dynamics Inc.

The B.C. 55-Plus Games committee in Nanaimo has appointed Diana Johnstone as president and Mary Smith as vice-president to oversee the creation of a board of directors.

Iskum Investments (Iskum), a modern business partnership comprised of more than twenty First Nations (the Consortium) hailing from Vancouver Island and the British Columbia coast, has been launched to facilitate economic reconciliation on behalf of nations, workers, and communities.

With an investment of $2 million from the provincial government, a partnership was formed between the province, BGC Central Vancouver Island, and the Nanaimo Innovation Academy Foundation. This partnership facilitated the opening of 56 childcare spaces in Nanaimo.

Canadian Tire Nanaimo, located at 4585 Uplands Drive, Nanaimo, announced the opening of the Garden Centre and Nursery.

The application period for a second micro-grant funding intake through Project Two of the BC Tourism Climate Resiliency Initiative is from May 13, 2024 to May 31, 2024. Eligible BC tourism businesses and non-profits may apply on a first-come, first-served basis.

COWICHAN – DUNCAN

Operations at Lake Cowichan and spring maintenance services on the weir equipment will commence on April 2, according to Brian Houle, the environment manager at the Catalyst Crofton mill, the owner and operator of the weir.

The Cowichan Community Centre, located at 2687 James St, will host a complimentary Chamber Mix & Mingle on April 4, featuring artisans from the Cowichan Valley. Guests and members of the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce are invited to attend the event.

The Hatton Insurance Agency in Duncan, run by Don and Natalie Hatton, has been recognized as the Broker of the Year for Western Canada. The company has decided to donate $5,000 to the Cowichan Trail Stewardship Society.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada presented the City of Duncan with the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for its annual financial report for 2022.

The Malahat Legion, Branch #134 received a generous donation from Cobblestone Pub‘s owner, Dave Kral, along with his employees, to help cover the cost of the Cobble Hill Cenotaph and associated area upgrades, which are scheduled to be finished in 2024.
