NANAIMO – South Nanaimo’s massive 294-hectare commercial/industrial/residential Sandstone project will go to public hearing in January. The project includes 2,200 residential units on both sides of the property straddling the Trans Canada Highway in south Chase River. The inclusion of industrial property is key considering the city’s lack of thusly zoned land, while rumors have persisted over the years that such a development could include Costco, since the warehouse retailer reportedly wants to have a gas station, which there is no room for at its current north Nanaimo location.

Carmague Properties has presented plans for the second phase of the Dover Ridge Apartments complex, an 88-unit, six-storey building at McRobb Avenue in north Nanaimo. The building will include studio units, and one, two and three bedroom apartments. Daryoush Firouzli is the architect for the project.
A&W Revenue Royalties Income Fund has announced it has reached an agreement in principle to bring the popular Pret A Manger coffee and sandwich chain to Canada. The plan calls for A&W’s food services to add Pret products to selected locations of its restaurants. Pret is based in the United Kingdom.

A 98 apartment building at 4961 Songbird Place near Nanaimo North Town Centre has been approved by city council.
Congratulations to Nanaimo Search and Rescue, which held a grand opening for its sparkling new headquarters on 4th Street in November. Donna Hais, General Manager of R.W. (Bob) Wall Contracting Ltd., was the general contractor on the job and the driving force to transform the building, which will serve the community with much-needed services.
