NANAIMO – Two companies on Vancouver Island that have emissions-reducing projects in two locations each will be receiving funding from the 2021 CleanBC Industry Fund, which is investing $70 million in 25 emission-reduction projects.
Catalyst Paper Corp. mills in Port Alberni and Crofton will receive funding. Alberni will get $323,100 to install a new luxury hog wood waste feed system at its pulp and paper mill, which will improve the reliability of biomass fuel supply to the main onsite steam boiler and reducing natural gas use.
Their Crofton Division will receive $5.85 million to reduce steam use by improving the efficiency of black liquor evaporation at the mill, which will reduce natural gas use in their onsite steam boilers.
Nanaimo Forest Products Ltd. will receive $12 million for fuel switching, to install processing, control and dust collection upgrades to their biomass boiler system at the Harmac Pacific pulp mill to reduce natural gas consumption. They will also get $616,783 for waste heat recovery to install upgrades to their largest pulp dryer and building heating and ventilation systems to recover waste heat and lower natural gas use at the facility.
