NANAIMO – The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is offering new learning opportunities as part of its annual Green Building Series, September 17 to October 17, 2015. The popular showcase also includes open houses at innovative Green Building sites throughout the region. “The Green Building Series gives everyone a chance to learn about the latest trends in building design,” said RDN Chair Joe Stanhope. “I encourage residents and professionals to take advantage of the many green building resources we have available over the next several weeks.”
On Thursday, September 17, the Series kicks off with a one-day training course on Passive House design and construction. Participants will receive a fundamental understanding of the elements of Passive House design, suitable for home owners, developers, REALTORS®, designers and planners. Learning credits are available for architects, planners and building inspectors. Residents and businesses within the RDN are eligible for a discounted rate of $50. Residents outside of the RDN can still attend at the regular $250 price. This course takes place at the Parksville Community Conference Centre.
This year groups of friends and neighbors can also receive a free Home Energy Coaching Session from a Certified Energy Advisor. The sessions are intended to be hosted by a resident in his or her home. The host will also receive a free Home Energy Assessment, worth $300, which can be used to qualify for additional energy efficiency incentives.
For those interested in solar power generation, a presentation by Viridian Energy Co-Operative will be held on Wednesday October 7, at the Cedar Heritage Centre. The talk will answer questions about solar power systems and associated costs. As always, the Series includes open-houses, showcasing renovations and new construction. Home owners and building experts will be available on-site to share their experience and knowledge. To protect the privacy of homeowners, addresses of project locations will be given only to those who register for the events.
