CAMPBELL RIVER – Trafigura Mining Group has signed an Impact Benefit Agreement with the Wei Wai Kum and We Wai Kai Nations for the Myra Falls copper-zinc mine it operates near Buttle Lake within Strathcona Park.
Myra Falls Mine has operated since 1966 and also produces lead as well as gold ore, which is transported to Discovery Terminal on Wei Wai Kum reserve land near Campbell River, from where it is shipped.
The IBA includes a mutual commitment to cooperate and consult, as well as providing environmental input, training, business and employment opportunities throughout the life of the mine.
A lease agreement for Discovery Terminal was also agreed upon.
Trafigura, which bought the mine in 2020, has announced plans to boost production to over 800,000 metric tonnes each year. Over 300 people work there.
“Both agreements lay the foundation for a strong partnership and shared benefits – including employment, economic opportunities and environmental protection, among others,” says Myra Falls Mine General Manager Adam Foulstone.
Chief Ronnie Chickite of We Wai Kai Nation states “The signing of this agreement is another step on our journey to develop a meaningful relationship with Myra Falls Mine, a relationship that will benefit our people and our communities.”
