NANAIMO – Sharon Kelly started coaching students at the university, and the long-time Vancouver Island University instructor and advisor is “fired up” about the new business and life coaching courses she’s offering in January through her Fire Up Every Leader (FUEL) Coaching Academy.

“Starting in January I will be teaching four brand new coaching courses: Creating Clear Agreements, Active Listening and Powerful Questions, Cultivating Trust and Practicing Presence and The Coaching Mindset,” says the Master Certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation, adding they’re high-lighted on her new Fire Up Coaching website (www.fireupcoaching.ca). “I love, love, love coaching.”

“I believe in authenticity, integrity, slow steady growth and finding joy in the learning process and I think that helps, too,” she says.

“I want to find and work with people who have different strengths and skills that can help me build this new part of the business and create a smooth roll-out.”

Clients can take one or two of the courses, or purchase all four in the Coaching Fundamentals package. Starting January 12, Sharon plans to host a lunch and learn series of in-person courses on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A weekly Wednesday morning live, interactive, virtual series starts January 24, and will run from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Zoom.

Sharon started coaching eight years ago, and has been honing her coaching skills, taking courses and coaching clients weekly.

“I have spent most of my career designing and teaching courses and workshops at the university level, so I thought it would be quite a lot of fun to try my hand at designing courses for people wanting to pick up coaching competencies that includes communicating effectively,” she states. “It’s not just coaches, but leaders who need to be able to frame conversations at the outset as well as be able to really listen to cultivate trust and understanding.

“Framing conversations and effective communication skills enhances leadership effectiveness. Cultivating trust and practicing presence is important in any relationship, not just between a coach and client,” she adds. “The Coaching Mindset focusses on learning about our own habits and intentionally shifting habits of thinking and responding to be more curious, open, flexible and client centered. I do not know of anyone who could not benefit from trying to learn to embody a coaching mindset.”

Sharon views her responsibility is to create curriculum that teaches leaders how to lever-age coaching conversations in their own work, as well as in leadership and management in organizations. She also describes herself as a curious learner.
