COWICHAN VALLEY – As the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 115th anniversary, it not only marked over a century of business advocacy but also showcased its continued relevance and dynamism in today’s fast-evolving business landscape. The Chamber’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club with a nostalgic 1908 theme, drew an impressive crowd of 61, representing 45 member organizations.

The event’s highlight was a 1908-themed Photo Booth, offering attendees a chance to immerse themselves in period-accurate costumes. This creative touch not only added a fun element but also served as a reminder of the Chamber’s deep historical roots in the region.

Keynote speakers, including Carolyn Prellwitz from the Cowichan Historical Society and Mayor Michelle Staples, provided insights into the Cowichan Valley’s rich business history. They covered the evolution of local industries like lumber, agriculture, and tourism, reflecting on how these sectors have shaped the region’s economy over the years.

The AGM was more than just a trip down memory lane. It was a forward-looking event where seven new and returning Directors were acclaimed to the Board, promising fresh ideas and directions. David van Deventer, President of the Chamber, delivered an insightful speech on the Chamber’s pivotal role in local business advocacy and policy formation, emphasizing the collective strength of the community.

Treasurer Leah Hudson and Anna Jones from Church Pickard, who performed the Annual Audit, reported the Chamber’s significant financial growth. An increase in membership dues revenue and a net gain of 30 members, pushing the total to 619 as of August 31, 2023, underscored the confidence the local business community places in the Chamber’s efforts.

Executive Director Sonja Nagel highlighted the Chamber’s shift in focus from pandemic-related challenges to reinforcing its vision of building a strong community through business strength. The Chamber’s growth to over 600 members, making it one of the largest on Vancouver Island, was a testament to this vision. Key achievements like the successful Black Tie Awards, the return of in-person events, and the introduction of Corporate Sponsorships were celebrated.

The Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce stands as a beacon of community strength and business advocacy. As it looks forward to continued growth and community connectivity, it remains a pivotal player in shaping the region’s business environment.
