The report outlines actionable solutions to strengthen regional resilience, ensuring long-term stability for businesses, residents, and visitors.

The deadline for early registration for the Indigenous Tourism Conference is March 31. The event is scheduled for April 28-30 in Ucluelet.

PORT ALBERNI

North Island College and the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council recently partnered to offer students a field school trip to Hawaii’s University of Hawai’i Maui College to learn about Indigenous education and culture. West Coast General Hospital Foundation has donated $90,000 to the hospital for the purchase of a new Mammotome for the operating room. This biopsy device allows for earlier detection of cancers.

The Bamfield Society has begun work on the Bamfield Majestic Old Growth Trail. Island Coastal Economic Trust provided $50,000 towards work in the initial phase of the trail. The project will establish an accessible pathway to ancient forests, connect visitors to nature, and advancing cultural and economic development in the area.

Huu-ay-aht First Nation citizen Larry Johnson is on B.C. Premier David Eby’s new task force that focuses on provincial food supply and food economy. The task force was formed in mid-February and is chaired by leadership from the BC Agriculture Council with 15 representatives from across the province’s agriculture and food sector.

The Parksville & District Chamber of Commerce is set to hold its Annual General Meeting on April 17, at 7:30 a.m. at Morningstar Golf Club.

The Foam Guy store in Nanaimo has closed as of March 23rd and will reopen on April 2nd at its new address: #8 – 1343 Alberni Hwy, Parksville.

Annual Community Foundation Grants of up to $4,000 are available through the Parksville Qualicum Community Foundation‘s open application until April 30th.

The Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region will host the 2025 Brant Wildlife Festival from Friday, April 4th to Monday, April 7th.

LADYSMITH – CHEMAINUS

The first Ladysmith Cinnamon Bun Challenge has raised over $12,000 for the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association Food Bank.

Demand at the Chemainus Harvest House Food Bank has increased by a record 60 per cent.

The Crofton Outdoor Pool will remain open this summer despite planned infrastructure repairs, according to the North Cowichan council.

Congratulations to the Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue (RCMSAR) Ladysmith 29! Last month, they received the Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award (EMESA) in Ottawa for their outstanding contributions to search and rescue and public safety.
Emergency Management Cowichan has launched the FireSmart Rebate Program to help homeowners in Ladysmith and the Cowichan Valley Regional District reduce wildfire risks. Ladysmith homeowners can get up to $4,000 in rebates for approved FireSmart work on their property. Applications are open NOW until June 1, 2026.

 

COWICHAN – DUNCAN

Marc Stoiber of Victoria is assisting COREO, a carpooling startup, in setting up trials at UVic and other Canadian universities.

The sole radio station in Cowichan, Sun FM 89.7, has been recognized as the first-ever Community Builder Award recipient from the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce.

A total of $12,300 has been raised by the newly established 100 People Who Care Cowichan group for the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation. In a significant move, Jimmy Pattison has pledged to match all donations up to $5 million for the fundraiser. This means that the contributions from 100 People Who Care Cowichan will effectively double, reaching a total of $24,600.

Malahat SkyWalk is offering free entrance to children and youth with one adult ticket from March 15 to 30.

Contract work for FortisBC‘s GasAMI Project has been provided by Khowutzun Development Corporation, the economic arm of the Cowichan Tribes, in partnership with EMB Management Ltd.
