NANAIMO – Refinishing hardwood floors is not only less expensive, but Boers Floors Ltd. owner Derek Boer believes it’s a clever way to recycle.

“Refinishing hardwood flooring will only gain popularity as the cost of materials to replace wood flooring goes up,” says Boer. “Instead of removing an old hardwood floor, it is more cost effective to refinish the floor. Plus, there’s no waste. It’s like built-in recycling.”

Derek Boer, owner of Boers Floors Ltd.

Derek Boer started Boer’s Floors Ltd. in 2010, after many years in the industry and is a member of the National Wood Flooring Association.

“We’re active members in the NWFA and all of our work follows their guidelines,” he says. “They’re very well known in the wood flooring industry for their high standards and ongoing education keeping pace with the changing market and products.”

Boer has been installing hardwood flooring for as long as he can remember.

“I started sanding and finishing gym floors right out of high school,” he says. “I did a four year apprenticeship, and carried on from there.”
Boers Floors and team serve clients throughout Central Vancouver Island.

“Because we specialize in hardwood flooring, installation, sanding and finishing, that can take us all over the Island.”

Boers Floors uses Bona floor finish and stain, the world’s largest floor finish manufacturer, as Boer states they are very durable product.

The company works with all types of hardwood, and Boer says they frequently work with reclaimed oak.

Boers Floors is well known for its craftmanship

“Oak is a timeless wood that you can stain almost any colour,” he says. “It’s a hard and durable wood, and it’s one of the most versatile. It has a beautiful grain with excellent variations.”

Boers Floors has grown consistently over the years, and their workload has expanded greatly.

“We subcontract to stores and do installations of the products they sell,” he says. Boers Floors is wanting to hire more people, like many companies in these times.

“We’re a family-oriented company, looking for skilled labourers. We’re interested in talking with anyone who wants to learn this trade,” Boer adds. “I’ve been working with wood flooring for many years, and I would like to share the knowledge I’ve gained about the many different aspects from sanding and finishing, to installation.”

Ultimately, the company’s success comes down to its commitment to hard work and attention to detail.

“We pay attention to our customers’ needs and deliver them in a professional manner,” he says.
