COWICHAN VALLEY – What happens when a small-town business community gets dressed to the nines and comes together to celebrate its finest? Magic. On April 11, the Chemainus Theatre Festival came alive with pride and community spirit as the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce hosted the 25th Anniversary of the Black Tie Awards.
This sold-out gala was more than a night of recognition—it was a heartfelt celebration of the people, places, and businesses that make Cowichan extraordinary. With tuxedos, gowns, a red carpet, and the RCMP Honour Guard setting a dignified tone, the evening had a strong community vibe—full of familiar faces, shared stories, and genuine appreciation for local efforts. The sense of connection was palpable from the moment guests stepped through the doors.
The spotlight was shared by 27 inspiring finalists across nine award categories, each representing the determination, creativity, and generosity that fuel the Cowichan Valley. From brand-new ventures to long-standing pillars of the business community, the stories behind the nominations reminded everyone just how much heart exists behind local success.
Among the evening’s most emotional highlights was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Fatima Da Silva of Nourish Cowichan. Her unwavering dedication to supporting vulnerable families brought the entire theatre to its feet in a standing ovation. Equally moving was the introduction of the new Community Builder Award, presented to 89.7 SunFM in recognition of their hands-on work supporting local initiatives and creating lasting impact through action—not just airtime.
The room buzzed with energy as each winner was announced. From Brunch on 3rd (Exceptional Customer Experience) to Holocene Distilling Project (Environmental Excellence), Rewild Homes’ Patrick and Jessica Whelan (Young Entrepreneur), and Flourish Kitchen (New Business), each story reinforced the passion and perseverance behind Cowichan’s thriving business scene. The awards also honoured excellence across business sizes, from solo ventures like Fabrications to larger employers like Old Farm Market Duncan.
Adding a personal and heartfelt moment to the night, the Chamber surprised its own Executive Director, Sonja Nagel, with a special recognition for her years of behind-the-scenes leadership and dedication to the event. Her vision and commitment have played a central role in making the Black Tie Awards the beloved tradition it is today.
With local food and drink, a confetti-filled finale, and a crowd united in celebration, the 25th Black Tie Awards served as a powerful reminder that community recognition fuels connection—and that Cowichan is a region worth celebrating, year after year.
