Kelowna Unveils Annual Report: “Connected”

KELOWNA – Kelowna City Council recently reviewed and approved the City’s 2016 Annual Report: Connected, showcasing City services, programs, projects, accomplishments and finances.

“Although the Annual Report meets important annual financial reporting requirements, it also provides us with an opportunity to highlight some of the services, programs and projects provided by the City during the past year,” says Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran.

“This includes long-term visioning projects like Imagine Kelowna, and addressing opportunities and challenges that our community is facing as one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, such as near-record real estate and construction activity, more than 1.73 million passengers through Kelowna International Airport and development of a homelessness strategy.”

City Council had its second full year together in 2016, refocusing on its priorities and making strides towards provide clean drinking water to all Kelowna residents, as well as fostering a culture of inclusiveness. For more information, visit the following link.

In 2016, the City continued to balance the community’s interest in maintaining levels and quality of services, while planning for a connected, healthy and sustainable community with the implementation of the Dark Fibre Strategy, Imagine Kelowna, and Healthy City Strategy. The City continued to balance investment in new and existing infrastructure, while leveraging opportunities to diversify revenue sources.

Property taxes provided $131.8 million (44.9 per cent) of the total $293.3 million revenue received by the City in 2016. In 2016, a total of $104.3 million was invested in the City’s capital program, which included the purchase of fleet vehicles, land, roadways, and active transportation corridors, water and wastewater utility upgrades, and protective services equipment and facilities.

The Annual Report is a summary of the City’s progress on major projects, services and financial performance. The City of Kelowna has won numerous awards over the last decade and a half from the Government Finance Officers Association for its financial reporting and budgeting.
