Chapman Industries Returning to Their Roots

December 9, 2022

Chapman Industries specializes in subdivision development, site preparation and services, public road reconstruction and road and highway construction.

VERNONLess is more isn’t usually the case when it comes to bolstering profits but for general contractor Chapman Industries Ltd., the phrase applies quite literally to the company’s preferred business model.

“Although during Covid we were lucky enough to stay busy, we found centralizing efforts and specializing in the Thompson-Okanagan area to be far more effective than managing jobs in two different areas of the province, so we shifted our thinking for the future,” said Terri Wong, Administration Manager at Chapman Industries.

Reshaping the company’s strategy has been a large component of the last three years, and after much consideration Chapman decided to concentrate its operations in the Okanagan and return to its roots in Vernon, which is where it all started.

“The company itself is right out of Vernon, so we are ready to be invested in Vernon and the surrounding area,” said Wong. “We have continued to grow and we are overjoyed to expand the Chapman name in the community.”

Earlier this year, Chapman was nominated in the industrial category at the 2022 Thompson-Okanagan Commercial Building Awards and the company is looking forward to working with the surrounding cities to better their infrastructure.

Recently, the company completed a multi-use pathway project on Silver Star Road which extends from Pleasant Valley all the way up to Blackcomb Way. The project benefits residents in the foothills area and connects them to a wide, protected walking path that runs from the community down to local shops and services.

In addition to company restructuring, Chapman has continued to expand upon its multifaceted approach to products and services. In addition to providing contracting services in the heavy civil construction and infrastructure sector, the company has a sand and gravel operation which supplies all the major concrete manufacturers in the Okanagan and beyond.

Due to the location and facilities at the new corporate offices in Spallumcheen, the company was able to hire a full-time red seal mechanic to help with their fleet of trucks and heavy equipment, making it more cost effective for all of the The Chapman Group, which includes Chapman Industries, Chapman Sand & Gravel and Bradan Contracting.

By establishing themselves as a staple in the Vernon community and offering more impactful opportunities, Wong and the team at Chapman Industries believe they can attract people back to the sector, which recently has faced staffing challenges.

“It’s not just a job, it’s a career choice and we are trying to build a very solid team that wants to be in the sector for the long haul,” said Wong. “We are trying to educate and open thought patterns to believe this is a career because there is so much you can do within the industry.”
