SURREY – Over $500 million in major capital projects were announced by the City of Surrey for three community recreation centres on May 1.

A new, 190,000 square foot Newton Community Centre will cost $310.6 million to build, with completion projected for 2029, the Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex is aiming at 2027 for $132.8 million, and the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre expansion, also projected to be finished by 2027, will cost $65.5 million.

“Surrey is undergoing a remarkable transformation, and these projects are a direct reflection of our unwavering commitment to building a city that prioritizes the well-being and quality of life for all residents,” says Mayor Brenda Locke. “These initiatives are not just infrastructure improvements—they are a testament to our vision of a vibrant, inclusive, and family-friendly Surrey where everyone has access to quality recreation, culture, and community spaces. We are committed to creating welcoming environments that foster connection, participation, and growth for generations to come.”

The Newton Community Centre will include a 50-metre swimming pool (Olympic size), gymnasiums, a fitness centre, art spaces and a modern library that is three times larger than its current library. Surrey anticipates selecting a design-build team by mid-2025.

The first phase of  the new Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex is on track for completion of its first two ice sheets this summer, which will provide state-of-the-art facilities for hockey, figure skating, and public skating. The project has been expanded due to increased demand to include a third ice sheet, with construction scheduled to begin later this year and finishing in early 2027. The complex will feature outdoor amenities, landscaping and parking.

Expansion of the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre will add 38,750 square feet to the facility by adding a second gymnasium, new fitness centre, arts and culture paces and upgraded amenities for children and seniors. Construction is expected to start this year.

Those announcements came on the heels of Surrey voting on three other projects in April.

Liberty Contract Management Inc. was awarded a $4.17 million contract to design and construct a covered, all-season sport court at South Surrey Athletic Park that can be used for lacrosse, ball hockey and pickle ball.

Wilco Civil Inc. will get $2.4 million to replace the rubberized track and associated track and field facilities beside North Surrey Community Park to enable it to host sanctioned competitive track and. field events, as well as general use by the public.

XL Turf Ltd. earned a $1.72 contract to replace the synthetic tur on fields 2 and 6 at Newton Athletic Park, which is primarily used for soccer.
