DELTA 

East Delta Hall and the surrounding land have been turned over to the City of Delta by the McKee Athletic Association for a modest fee of $1, with the request that council approve a bylaw acknowledging the hall’s heritage status.

The City of Delta is now one step closer to council being able to offer final approval for the new Official Community Plan (OCP) after the proposed new Regional Context Statement received unanimous approval from the Metro Vancouver Board.

 The application for a rental apartment building on Ladner Trunk Road has started the public comment period in Delta. The proposed structure will have 40 residential units, 2 visitor units, and 5 ridesharing spaces.

In order to serve the general public, the Royal Canadian Legion Tsawwassen Branch No. 289, which is housed in the Century Square shopping centre on 56 Street, has asked to modify its liquor permit from liquor primary club to liquor primary.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada granted the Tilbury Marine Jetty Project its final environmental assessment decision after a rigors scientific and Indigenous knowledge-based evaluation.

Boundary Bay Airport is hosting an Airshow on July 13.

 

WHITE ROCK

Waste Connections of Canada will be hosting the 73rd White Rock Sea Festival & Semiahmoo Days celebration, which takes place from August 2–4, 2024, kicking off in Semiahmoo Park.

Bandra Cafe has recently opened at 15519 Marine Dr, White Rock.

 

SURREY 

Two new judges, Paul Pearson and Parveen Nijjar, have been appointed to the Provincial Court by the government of British Columbia. Their terms will begin on July 25, 2024.

Of the 65 insolvency filings highlighted in the Insolvency Insider in Q2 2024 real estate led all industries with 17 filings mentioned, followed by cannabis with 8 filings, and retail and healthcare with 4 filings each. 40 filings mentioned were in Ontario, followed by 11 in Alberta, and 7 in British Columbia.

Additional affordable and supportive housing, linked to health and social services, is now part of the plans for a community facility at 301 E Hastings St. in the Downtown Eastside (DTES).

Surrey City Council has approved Accorde Wcpg Lots 12 (B) Ltd.‘s application to develop two high-rise residential towers at 13265-104 Ave.

Granville College is opening new state-of-the art campus locations in Vancouver’s downtown core and Surrey City Centre. Both Surrey and Vancouver have become international education hubs attracting students from all over the world for training that leads to secure and meaningful employment. Granville College provides diploma and training programs that include Canada’s first veterinary technician program along with learning for paralegal, business and management, human resources management, dental office administration, hospitality, healthcare and English as a Second Language (ESL).

Westland Insurance has recently acquired Excel Insurance Lloydminster in Lloydminster, Alberta and M. Butler Insurance in Niagara Falls, Ontario, effective June 24. These acquisitions bring Westland into two new communities and represent Westland’s continued expansion across Canada.

BC Hydro has announced plans to invest over $3 billion in capital projects on Vancouver Island in the coming decade as part of its 10-Year Capital Plan. These include the construction of a new substation in Langford and the replacement of ageing underground cables that serve Victoria, Esquimalt, and Saanich. Additionally, there will be significant investments in distribution to increase power-line capacity in various areas such as Bear Mountain, Langford Heights, Victoria, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Saanich, and Nanaimo. BC Hydro also plans to upgrade transmission capacity to Vancouver Island by replacing old undersea cables with new ones near the Gulf Islands. Lastly, seismic upgrade projects are in the works for BC Hydro’s three dams within the Campbell River system – John Hart, Strathcona, and Ladore.

The City of Surrey‘s Mud Bay Nature-Based Foreshore Enhancement project will not need an environmental assessment certificate to proceed, according to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

The City of Surrey and Transport Canada work together to clear debris and abandoned boats from the Nicomekl River in South Surrey.

The Tudor Inn, currently known as the Bennett Craft Kitchen at 187 176 St., has earned heritage distinction.

During the Regular Council Meeting on June 24, Surrey City Council approved Partnering, License and Operating Agreements with Alexandra Neighbourhood House for 25 new licensed childcare spaces at Strawberry Hill Hall.

LANGLEY 

The 50th Anniversary Gala of Langley Lodge, scheduled for September 27 at the Coast Langley Hotel and Convention Centre, is now accepting reservations.

On July 9 and 29, registration systems will not be available due to a maintenance upgrade on Langley City’s recreation registration platform. Instead, cash payments only will be accepted.

A major modification to Games Room access without adult supervision will take effect on July 1, 2024. The Canadian Safety Council recommends that children under 10 not be left alone, hence the minimum age for unsupervised access will be raised to 10.

ABBOTSFORD 

The Abbotsford school district has appointed Kristi Ferguson as its new manager of communications.

Starting July 18, 2024, landlords will need to utilise the Landlord Use Web Portal, a new website, to generate Notices to End Tenancy for personal occupancy or caretaker. This change aims to enhance renter protection by preventing unjust evictions and streamlining the process for landlords.

After 11 years in Abbotsford, Brodeur’s Bistro is moving to a new location with more parking spaces in Langley at the corner of 86th Avenue and 203rd Street.

The Abbotsford Agrifair will take place in Exhibition Park in Abbotsford from August 2–4.

 

CHILLIWACK 

The Nature Conservancy of Canada has acquired Carey Island in the Fraser River, close to Chilliwack, in order to help preserve its unique and invaluable ecosystem.

Breakwater Contracting was given a $1.3 million contract by the city council on July 2 for the Luckakuck Way traffic signal project.

 

PITT MEADOWS 

The grand opening of Kelo Cannabis is scheduled for July 13 at 112-19150 Lougheed Hwy in Pitt Meadows.

This summer, Pitt Meadows is giving residents and businesses free yard signage to promote water conservation and regional lawn watering restrictions.

The Centex Petroleum station in Pitt Meadows, located at 19181 Lougheed Hwy., officially opened for business on July 5.

 

MAPLE RIDGE 

The Ridge Meadows Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will be held on July 24 at Mini Mall Storage, 11307 Maple Crescent, Maple Ridge.

More than 3120 athletes, coaches, and officials will be participating in the Maple Ridge 2024 BC Summer Games, which will take place July 17–21, 2024. The event is being held on the traditional territories of the Katzie (q̓ic̓əy̓) First Nation and Kwantlen (qʼʷa:n̓ƛʼən̓) First Nation.

 

MISSION 

The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce celebrated the Grand Reopening of the Fraser Valley Humane Society – Feline Rescue & Adoption Centre on Saturday.

The truck rerouting project on Hwy 7 from Glasgow Ave to Catherwood St. will involve intersection enhancements by Keywest Asphalt from July 12 to July 16. There will be single-lane alternating traffic throughout this time, and motorists are urged to find other routes.
