SURREY –  A contract for $1.2 M has been awarded for the demolition of the former North Surrey Recreation Centre to make way for the development of Centre Block which includes two high-rise commercial office towers, a public plaza and ground-level retail units in the Surrey downtown City Centre.

Centre Block is a 2+ million sq. ft. commercial and institutional project in Surrey City Centre which will advance the development of Surrey’s central business district and grow the City’s commercial tax base. Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC) led the development of a master plan for this strategically important site in partnership with Simon Fraser University and the City. The master plan can be executed in up to 4 phases, depending on the market and other factors. The development will be adjacent to one of the region’s most intensively used transit hubs.

“Centre Block is more than just a redevelopment project. It will be the catalyst for economic growth, innovation and community engagement in our ever-expanding City Centre,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Centre Block will be a vibrant, accessible, and modern urban centre near rapid transit and major transportation routes. It is also a natural extension of the considerable civic investment in the area as reflected in the new City Hall, Library and Civic Plaza and will progress Surrey’s long-term economic interests through advancing a downtown business district.”

The former Recreation Centre, located at 10275 City Parkway, will undergo phased demolition beginning in early 2025, with an expected completion date of summer 2025. Given the site’s proximity to the SkyTrain line and the Surrey Central bus loop, Arena 1 on the north side of the building will be demolished first, and Arena 2 and Pool will follow.

The City’s Project Team has awarded the contract to Division 2 Contracting Ltd.  in the amount of 1,436,400.00 (including applicable taxes and contingency). Funding for the demolition contract is available in the approved 2024 Corporate Capital Budget.
