DELTA – At the March 11, 2024 Regular Meeting, Delta Council unanimously approved the replacement of Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre with a new, modern facility to be built at Winskill Park.

The new aquatic centre is proposed to feature an eight-lane 25-meter lap pool, a leisure pool, a teaching pool, accessible hot tub, sauna and steam room, as well as one- and three-meter diving boards. Additionally, it will house a fully equipped fitness centre, gymnasium, and other multi-purpose spaces, catering to the diverse needs of our community.

Mayor George V. Harvie emphasized the importance of a new facility, stating, “As our community continues to grow, the need for modern, accessible facilities becomes increasingly apparent. The approval of a new facility to replace Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre underscores Delta Council’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our residents. This facility will not only enhance our recreational opportunities but also serve as a focal point for community vibrancy and well-being.”

Funding for this project was secured through the 2024-2028 Financial Plan, with a 2 per cent recreation capital levy being added to property taxes for recreation capital investment. Costs for this new facility are estimated between 120-130 million dollars.

“Major projects like this are an investment in our community for generations to come and I’m excited to see this project move forward. This Council remains dedicated to funding essential sports and recreation infrastructure in our community. We’ve been planning for this project for a number of years, recognizing the need to address this aging facility reaching the end of its life cycle,” added Mayor Harvie.

City staff will issue request for proposals later this week to select a construction manager and an architect, with the selections happening in late-April and design work commencing in early May.

The City will also launch a comprehensive public engagement process for this project in May, aiming to collaborate with residents, swim clubs, and other user groups on design and other key features for the new facility.
