DELTA

 Neil Dubord, the Delta Police Chief, has been selected as a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal.

The Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead in Saanich opened its Long-Term Care at Home program on July 31. It offers seniors some of the assistance of a long-term care facility right in their own home. Attendees included health care providers, elders activists, and provincial and local lawmakers. The pilot program is being implemented with 11 seniors at KinVillage in Delta and 15 seniors at Broadmead Care Society.

West Coast Seeds announces a fundraising campaign to support wildfire relief efforts in Canada. Throughout the month of August, every wildflower seed packet purchased will directly benefit the Red Cross Canadian Wildfire Fund.

An expansive 15-acre property located at 10555 64 Ave in East Ladner has recently been listed for sale for $45 million. This property had previously obtained preliminary approval for the development of a cold storage facility.

WHITE ROCK 

Darryl Walker, the former mayor of White Rock, will be a candidate for the BC NDP in Surrey-White Rock during the provincial election in the fall.

The 6-story wooden rental building on the lot currently held by TELUS at the southwest corner of North Bluff and Oxford Street was approved to proceed.

The White Rock Farmers Market celebrates its 25th anniversary.

A $5,750 cheque was presented to the City of White Rock by members of the Self Advocates of Semiahmoo, which will be used for the accessibility mat for the White Rock Pier.

 

SURREY

Naomi Martens

Naomi Martens has been appointed as the deputy nurse of the provincial Hemodialysis Emergency Response Team (HEST).

The 22nd DQ Miracle Treat Day will take place on August 8th at 123 pariticipating DQ locations across BC and the Yukon. They will donate net proceeds from every Blizzard Treat sold, to the BC Children’s Hopsital Foundation. $280,676.74 was raised in 2023.

Vanessa Chu Scrimini of Simon Fraser University was the recipient of the Future Leader Award as part Export Development Canada’s (EDC) 2024 Youth Education scholarships. Sebastian Martin Hidalgo Flores, also of SFU received the International Business Scholarship. All scholarships are in the amount of $5,000

NEXE Innovations Inc., a leader in innovative compostable materials solutions, announced that it has closed on the sale of its original facility in Surrey, for a total purchase price of $5.7 million. The facility was purchased in June 2016 for $1.37 million, and NEXE spent an additional ~$1.0 million on tenant improvements for a total initial investment of approximately $2.4 million. At the time of the sale, the Surrey Facility was debt-free. NEXE has a solid cash position of over $10 million as of Q3 2024 and the additional proceeds of $5.7 million will be invested in operations, sales, and marketing. The Surrey facility was primarily used for R&D and developing the first versions of our compostable coffee pods.

Indra Bhan, the current chief operating officer, has consented to replace Anita Huberman as interim chief executive officer of the Surrey Board of Trade, effective August 31st.

MISSION 

A new gymnasium, funded at around $6.9 million and built with mass timber for the walls and roof and light wood frames for the support parts, has been completed at École des Deux-Rives in Mission.

Two potential budget cuts were proposed by TransLink, which would have reduced or terminated West Coast Express trips. According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, financing has been made available to prevent TransLink from slashing services, notably the West Coast Express, in recent years.

Almost 1,800 additional housing units are to be constructed in the City of Mission over the next five years, according to the province’s housing plan.
