SMITHERS – Ever since Johanna Pfalz founded Eclipse Geomatics in 2006, she has focused on building a team of experts that today provide spatial solutions and information management services to the natural resources sector.

As projects became more complex and additional staff came onboard, the company incorporated in June 2017 with the main office in Smithers and satellite offices in Terrace and Richmond.

Eclipse Geomatics’ mission is to “support community and environmental sustainability by transforming and visualizing data. We achieve our mission by providing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, data visualization, data hub management and information management services.”

Johanna says the company’s goal is to “build visualizations that make data more accessible, useful and engaging for our clients in order to help them make more informed business decisions. With AI on the horizon, Eclipse Geomatics strives to progressively evolve into an informatics company that is open to new technologies and possibilities.”

The range of services provided by Eclipse includes Data Visualization, Cartography and GIS Spatial Analysis, Data Hub Development, Information Management and Data Governance, Technical Capacity Training and Non-Profit Administration,

“I am grateful for my brilliant, hard-working, and innovative team, and our overall commitment to provide great value to our clients,” Johanna states. “The Eclipse Geomatics team is a ‘connector’ for clients — working to meet their current needs while anticipating future requirements and positioning them for long-term success. Our connections and relationships are shaped by the rural communities we serve.”

Two of the more successful products and services that Eclipse has delivered on are centered around building community data hubs, including the Skeena Salmon Data Centre for the Skeena Knowledge Trust, as well as the Bulkley Valley Research Centre Data Hub.

“These innovative tools utilize open source software to elevate community knowledge and engagement,” Johanna notes.

In her work as a consultant, Johanna has provided GIS services in B.C., Alberta and across Canada. Her work has focused on ecological land classification, land use planning and monitoring, environmental impact assessment, and documenting traditional knowledge for First Nations.

Prior to launching out on her own, she worked with the BC government in Information Management for 10 years, including serving as Section Head of the regional Smithers GIS section.

Looking ahead, Eclipse Geomatics is anticipating strong growth for the future.

“As with so many businesses that found 2020 a difficult year to navigate, the company was fortunate to receive a grant from Northern Development Initiative Trust which provided an opportunity to revitalize our Strategic Plan and set a more focused direction,” she adds. “The company can now focus on generating growth that is aligned with our corporate vision and values with a strong emphasis on place, client relationships, and employee well-being.
