BRITISH COLUMBIA – As Emergency Preparedness Week every May reminds us, being ready for the unexpected is more than a best practice—it’s a necessity. For rural communities and the small businesses that sustain them, the impact of economic disasters and disruptions can be profound. That’s why Community Futures British Columbia (CFBC) launched the Rural Resiliency Initiative—a proactive, adaptable, and community-focused approach to economic preparedness, response, and recovery.

The Rural Resiliency Initiative is built on CFBC’s long-standing role as a trusted partner in economic development across rural BC. With its 34 offices located throughout BC, Community Futures is uniquely positioned to act swiftly and effectively in times of crisis. Whether it’s supporting local business continuity during wildfires or helping entrepreneurs navigate a shifting economy, CFBC brings deep experience and proven strategies to the table.

Rural Resiliency Supports for Governments

For governments, Indigenous-governing bodies, and community developers, RRI’s Emergency Quick Response and Recovery Team (EQRRT) is an invaluable resource. The EQRRT is a specialized leadership team within CFBC that offers expertise and targeted supports during economic emergencies and recovery periods. Working with their partners and local Community Futures offices, the team can assist with impact assessments and analysis, community action planning, and guidance on funding and insurance for businesses. The team can mobilize quickly to collaborate with local stakeholders to ensure that economic recovery efforts are not only immediate but sustainable for the community.

Community leaders are encouraged to connect with the EQRRT proactively—not just during emergencies—to discuss shared opportunities for bolstering local business resilience.

Rural Resiliency Support for Entrepreneurs

For business owners, CFBC currently offers a comprehensive suite of resilience-focused online learning and consulting services through myCommunityFutures (myCF), an accessible online platform for entrepreneurs at any stage.

Webinar and workshop topics at www.myCommunityFuturesBC.ca include digital marketing, human resources, e-commerce, finance, strategy and exporting, and 1-on-1 consulting services are available on any topic. A series of online Lunch And Learn webinars on the theme of Emergency Preparation will be taking place during the first week of May. Services from myCF are tailored to the realities of small businesses in rural BC, providing practical, actionable skills to start, grow or strengthen a business.

A Proven Track Record in Economic Recovery

Since 1985, Community Futures offices throughout BC have played a critical role in helping their business communities recover from wildfires, floods, and economic downturns. This hands-on experience before, during and long after the emergency has concluded, has shaped a deep understanding of what rural businesses and communities need to bounce back stronger.

The Rural Resiliency Initiative builds on this foundation, providing immediate and long-term support that is place-based, rural community-led, and economically focused.

Looking Ahead

Emergency Preparedness Week offers an important reminder for communities and businesses alike to think about how ready they are to face the next challenge. The Rural Resiliency Initiative offers a pathway forward—one that leverages CFBC’s unique community connections, specialized knowledge, and long-standing commitment to rural development.

Whether you’re a local leader planning for resilience, or a business owner seeking practical support, Community Futures is here to help.
