LANGLEY CHAMBER: NEW RELIEF FOR TARIFFS ON US IMPORTS

April 28, 2025

CORY REDEKOP

LANGLEY – To offset the rising costs caused by Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on US goods, the Government of Canada has introduced a Remission Order to support affected sectors. If your business has been impacted by these tariffs on US imports into Canada — and you are in the health care, manufacturing, or food/beverage processing sectors — you may be eligible for relief

Below is a summary of the government order, including who qualifies, how to apply, and what steps to take.  For more information, consult Canada Border Services Agency, or your customs broker.

What Is It?
This Remission Order allows Canadian businesses to claim relief for tariffs paid or payable because of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on US imports, including the 25% tariffs on a variety of goods (March 4 tariffs), the 25% steel and aluminum tariffs (March 13 tariffs), and the motor vehicle tariffs (April 9 tariffs).  This remission will be either a rebate (if already paid) or an avoidance if claimed at the time of import.

It applies to goods imported before October 16, 2025, and is intended to minimize the economic impact on Canadian manufacturers, food/beverage processors, health care providers, and public safety sectors.

Who Is Eligible?

This support is specifically available for goods used in the following sectors:

1. Public Health, Public Safety & National Security  –  Hospitals, paramedics, firefighters, police, correctional services National Defence, CSIS, and similar public agencies
2. Health Care – Hospitals, clinics, labs, dentists, long-term care facilities, and organizations providing medically necessary products or services
3. Manufacturing – Manufacturing, Processing & Food/Beverage Packaging
4. Certain Medical or Nutritional Goods – A specific list of tariff-classified goods primarily infant and nutritional formulas, compression garments, and medical packaging pouches

What Are the Conditions?

To qualify for remission:

  • Goods must be imported before October 16, 2025
  • No other surtax relief must have already been claimed
  • Claims must be submitted within two years of the import date
  • You must keep and submit documentation (CAD forms, invoices, purchase orders, bills of lading, etc.)
