COMOX VALLEY – The Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce is proud to support the launch of Excel Career College’s AI in Aquaculture program—an innovative, 17-week, fully funded training initiative designed to prepare B.C.’s aquaculture workforce for the future.

As one of our valued corporate partners, Excel Career College has not only developed this program in response to real industry demand but has done so through strong collaboration with regional aquaculture leaders and community interestholders, including the Chamber. The Chamber played an active role in supporting Excel’s successful funding application, contributing to program development, and will continue to be involved in an advisory capacity while helping students transition into employment after graduation.

This program arrives at a critical time. With the federal cap on international student enrollment impacting many private post-secondary institutions across the country, Excel Career College has chosen to respond not with retreat, but with resilience. The launch of AI in Aquaculture is a powerful example of how local institutions can pivot toward long-term success by embracing innovation and collaboration.

“Excel Career College has shown leadership in responding to both challenges and opportunities,” says Tracey Clarke, Executive Director of the Comox Valley Chamber. “By bringing together educators, employers, and industry experts, this program reflects exactly the kind of cross-sector teamwork that builds a more resilient, future-ready region. This initiative is proof that by working together, we can turn challenges into momentum.”

Delivered in a blended format, the program combines online theoretical learning with in-person, hands-on training at Excel’s Courtenay campus. Students will explore a range of timely topics—from AI integration and sustainable aquaculture to ethical digital practices, entrepreneurship, and environmental stewardship. Key industry certifications such as WHMIS, Forklift, SVOP, CPR, and Confined Space are also included, ensuring graduates leave with both technical and practical skills.

Importantly, the program includes work-integrated learning through real-world practicum placements with local aquaculture operations. These partnerships not only enhance learning but connect graduates directly to job opportunities—where the Chamber will play a key role in helping forge these employer connections.

British Columbia’s aquaculture industry is a major contributor to Canada’s food economy, and the demand for professionals who can bridge traditional practices with emerging technologies continues to grow. By anchoring this program in the Comox Valley, we are helping position our region as a centre of innovation and workforce development.

At the Chamber, we believe that strong partnerships across education, business, and government are essential to regional prosperity. The AI in Aquaculture program is a shining example of what’s possible when we work together with purpose.
