Former Prince George Mayor Dan Rogers, was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Canada for his 10 years of service to the Chamber network.

Subway Restaurants in Canada are actively fundraising to support the Never Miss Lunch program. For every cookie sold, $1 will be contributed to Foodbanks Canada, supporting local kids in each community.

The RONA Foundation, which manages the philanthropic activities of RONA inc., one of Canada’s largest home improvement retailers, has raised approximately $515,000 as a results of its Home Sweet Home campaign, which ran from September 1 to October 7, 2024. The fund will be used to improve housing for domestic abuse victims and their children, low-income families, and persons with disabilities or mental health challenges. More than $8,000 will go to 3 Vancouver Island NPOs.

Registration is now open for the inaugural Future Fuels Forum, scheduled for January 13 and 14, 2025, at the House of Ancestors, according to an announcement from the City of Prince George. The two-day event aims to foster collaboration among industry leaders, innovators, policymakers, and experts to discuss the future of hydrogen and sustainable energy solutions.

BC Transit is set to provide complimentary transit services in the city on Saturday, October 19th, facilitating access to polling locations.

Air Canada pilots have approved a tentative agreement with the airline, alleviating concerns about a potential strike as they move to ratify the new deal.

PRINCE GEORGE

In honor of King Charles III’s coronation, Chief Gidansda Guujaaw of Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, was given a national excellence award for his decades-long leadership at the Council of the Haida Nation and for preserving and renewing Haida culture.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority has announced a $118,500 contribution to support food security initiatives for a First Nation in northwest B.C. A new Food Security Centre has been established in collaboration with the Gitanyow Huwilp Society, focusing on the processing of wild and farmed foods as well as the preparation of traditional Indigenous medicines.

Stricter regulations on short-term rentals have been put in place by the City of Prince Rupert in an effort to address the housing scarcity and give priority to permanent homes.

On September 28, the Prince Rupert Regional Community Foundation (PRRCF) gave checks to six local organizations including: 333 Recovery Homes Society, Prince Rupert Senior’s Centre, Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association, Prince Rupert Curling Club, and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge.

FORT ST JOHN 

In late October, a change will be made to one of the local BC Transit routes in Dawson Creek. Route One Northside,  will no longer use 95th Avenue but will instead run along 96th Avenue between 10th Street and 17th Street.

The inaugural Fort St. John Wedding Show is scheduled to take place on January 19th at the Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre, hosted by Moose Media.

The Canadian Cancer Society received $145,598.03 from this year’s Cops For Cancer Tour de North fundraiser, which saw cyclists travel through Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, Hudson’s Hope, Chetwynd, and other locations.

Fort St. John has officially declared November as Be an Angel month, aligning with the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign.

 

KITIMAT

TERRACE 

Upgrades to the infrastructure of the Terrace campus at Coast Mountain College, funded by the college, the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, are anticipated to be finalized by October 18, 2024.

The Terrace Public Library is set to participate in the annual Early Years Family Fair on October 26, taking place at Cassie Hall Elementary School, alongside community partners.

Registration is open for the Indigenous Tools for Living Training scheduled on October 21-24 in Terrace.

The Terrace Peaks Gymnastics Club is hosting A Very Spooky ProD Day Camp on October 25th, followed by the Annual Halloween Party on October 27th.

 

WILLIAMS LAKE

Chief Will-Yum Gas Bar located at 2581 Cariboo Highway 97 S, Williams Lake, is celebrating 30 years anniversary.

Chances Bulk Unloading Ltd. was awarded the tender to deliver dried bulk roadway salt at a cost of $228.34 per cubic meter, tax excluded.

This fall, the City intends to send its lake harvester back out on Williams Lake to clear some of the vegetation that is endangering recreationalists, according to Chief Administrative Officer Gary Muraca.

A business facade improvement program application in the amount of $20,000 was approved by council for the Northern Development Initiative Trust.

On Thursday, October 31, the Williams Lake Stampede Grounds will host the 45th Annual Halloween Fireworks.The Williams Lake Lions Club will be providing hot dogs and hot chocolate for a donation, and Tolko will be providing firewood.

The Council has given the green light to a development variance permit application submitted by Rick Lendvoy for Cheol and Hee Holding Group Ltd. This approval allows for an amendment to the Town of Williams Lake Residential Mobile Home Parks Bylaw, specifically reducing the internal access road right-of-way setback for four mobile home units from 10 feet to zero feet.

 

SMITHERS 

The Town of Smithers is seeking input until November 1st on their present communication initiatives.

Former Smithers RCMP Andrew Burton has been named Superintendent and Detachment Commander of the Nanaimo Police Department.

Taylor Bachrach, a member of parliament for Skeena-Bulkley Valley, announced that the senate has passed the NDP’s pharmacare proposal. This plan covers diabetic treatment, hormone replacement, and contraception.

An open house was held in the Smithers council chambers by WSP to discuss the Princess Street Upgrade Project. 

Artemis Gold‘s Blackwater Mine is set to achieve its first gold pour in the fourth quarter of this year.

 

QUESNEL 

The province has allocated $195,000 to the city for the completion of required policy updates. Currently, there is a remaining balance of $155,000 after making modest expenditures for updating the zoning bylaw related to Small Scale Multi-Unit Housing and conducting the Housing Needs Assessment.

Quesnel is now holding a community engagement event to kick off the creation of a new 5-year Economic Development Strategy. Participate in 10- to 15-minute survey to be eligible to win $50.
