PRINCE GEORGE

Jim Martin

Jim Martin, a retired municipal administrator, is joining the University of Northern British Columbia’s Board of Governors as an order-in-council appointment. Martin spent nearly 30 years working for the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, including 17 years as the Chief Administrative Officer before his retirement in December 2023.

Viacore Solutions has announced a change in roles within the company. Mark MacKenzie will be expanding his responsibilities as he takes on the position of Regional Manager for British Columbia. Meanwhile, Martin Guillemette, the current Regional Manager of BC, will be transitioning to the role of Vice President of Business Development- Canada.

Mike McCardell announced his retirement at the end of the month, following a career spanning 62 years in the news industry.

Dr. Chengbo Fu, Associate Professor of Finance at UNBC School of Business, is a recipient of the 2024 University Excellence in Research Award.

Dr. Brian Forzley

Dr. Brian Forzley has been appointed as Interior Health Authority‘s medical director of renal services, as announced by BC Renal.

Project One of the BC Tourism Climate Resiliency Initiative is currently accepting applications from qualified BC tourism enterprises for the the fall 2024 intake of Facilitated Sustainable Tourism and Climate Adaptation Planning.

The Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division has confirmed that the Prince George Native Friendship Centre has been named as the successful Northern BC proponent for the service “Peer Assisted Care Teams,” (PACT) a mobile community-led crisis response funded by the Province of BC operating in Kamloops, Prince George and Comox Valley.

 Integris Credit Union recently celebrated the success of the 2024 Integris FUN-draiser Block Party, raising an impressive $7,100. The funds will go towards supporting the Northern BC Children and Families Hearing Society and the Prince George Senior Activity Centre.

Life Sciences BC will be hosting a Showcase Series event, taking place in Prince George, on October 2, at the Marriott Courtyard. 

The University of Northern British Columbia, along with community partner Brownridge Insurance and the City of Prince George, recently displayed an impressive renovation to the gymnasium floor at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre. The new design showcases the Trevor Angus Wolf artwork.

FORT ST JOHN 

Canfor has announced that their Plateau and Fort St. John sawmills in Northern British Columbia would be closing.

Terus Construction recently hosted their 18th annual Charity Golf Tournament at Lakepoint Golf and Country Club on August 16th. The event successfully raised $53,000, which will be used to support FSJACL’s capital campaign. The campaign aims to transform their current location at 10251 100th Street in Fort St. John into a more inclusive community centre for their clients.

The Fort St. John Seniors Society Hall has received a donation of over $21,000 from the live auction, donors, McRae’s family, and other sources at the Annual Fort St. John Fred Fest.

Wilson Concrete, a local concrete manufacturer, has received additional funding from the Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation’s BC Manufacturing Job Fund. The company is expected to create more than a dozen new jobs in Fort St. John.

The Grand Opening of Fort St. John Crossing at 11203 – 11127 Alaska Rd South is on September 14.

Thirteen new First Nations Primary Care Centres (NPCCs) in British Columbia have been given the green light to open, including Chetwynd’s MîØoMâCihêwi Kamik Northern Nations Wellness Centre.

 

KITIMAT

Lesley Davidson has joined Pro Paint Canada in Kitimat as a Site Coordinator for the LNG project.

Brittaney Everatt is starting a new position as Asset HSSE Trainer at LNG Canada in Kitimat.

The first LNG export terminal in Canada, located in Kitimat, is almost finished testing and getting closer to its much anticipated launch. Instead of starting in the middle of 2025, shipments from the LNG Canada terminal may happen later this year.

 

TERRACE

The Zymagotitz River, right along Valhalla Resort‘s property in Terrace, has officially opened for Coho salmon fishing season.

The 8th Annual N2N Terrace Forum is set to return on October 8-10, 2024.

RONA Terrace Building Supplies is looking to hire a Warehouse Associate.

Ella’s Place, a 22 second-stage homes, which will provide women and their children with safe and stable accommodation, is now open in Terrace.

WILLIAMS LAKE

On September 4, 2024, the Signal Point Pioneer Room hosted a highly productive Recruitment & Retention Planning Session, organized by the Williams Lake & District Chamber of Commerce, the City of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Regional District. This collaborative event brought together 38 community members to discuss strategies for attracting and retaining new professionals in Williams Lake. Participants engaged in interactive brainstorming sessions to identify the key features that make Williams Lake a unique and attractive place to live and work.

The City of Williams Lake Council has reaffirmed its commitment to facilitate a deal between Atlantic Power Corporation’s Williams Lake Plant and the Province, ensuring the plant’s continued operations in the future, as discussed during the August 27 Regular Meeting.

The first-ever Ride Your Ride Ladies Bike Fest was a great success, according to Williams Lake Cycling Club organizer Beth Holden.

Williams Lake Farmers’ Market is scheduled on September 13th, at Kiwanis Park, right next to the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

Enbridge Community and Indigenous Relations Advisor Jennifer Prochera provided Williams Lake City Council a regional update on its Sunrise Expansion Project, which would include roughly 137 kilometres of new pipeline added to its BC Pipeline system – 6.1 kilometres of which is proposed to be added to the existing pipeline east of Williams Lake and north of 150 Mile House.

 

SMITHERS 

Jonathan and Terri-Ann Dieleman are taking over Countrywide Sports. They are excited to provide a great sporting goods store for the area.

The Town of Smithers is inviting applications for the Fire Chief position. The deadline to apply is September 23.

The Smithers Skate Park is having its Grand Opening on September 20.

The Town of Smithers is looking for individuals to join the Advisory Planning Commission (APC), an important committee that offers guidance to the Council on planning issues. Applications are due by Wednesday, December 4.

The Town of Smithers is seeking dedicated community members to join the Smithers Public Library Board. Applications will be accepted until November 13.

The Coast Mountain College in Smithers is having a Career Fair on Sept 28.

 

QUESNEL

The British Columbia Economic Development Association (BCEDA) announces the names of the first five professionals to become BCEDA Certified Economic Development Professionals (CEDP.BC). First-ever CEDP.BC certified individuals are: Michael McGee, owner of ACED Management Inc.; Rose Klukas, Director of Economic Development and Indigenous Relations, City of Campbell River; Lana Fitt, Executive Director of Salmon Arm Economic Development Society; Amy Reid, Manager of Economic Development and Tourism, City of Quesnel; and Colleen Bond, Partner, EDCD Consulting.

Twenty temporary housing units, which will be gated in and have access controls, will be built to shelter the current occupants at Grace Inn which is set to be demolished. BC Housing will make major enhancement to the site’s management, which is expected to be finished by November.

 

100 MILE HOUSE 

Kot Auto Group has recently expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of Sunrise Ford in 100 Mile House.

The District of 100 Mile House has collaborated with HM Aero to prepare a Master Plan that will guide infrastructure and operations investments, as well as advance air ambulance, wildfire suppression, and general aviation access at 100 Mile House Airport, a regional asset that serves 100 Mile House and the South Cariboo, with the support of the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
