VICTORIA – Construction is now underway on a solar energy project that will power about half of the electricity needs for the library on the Lansdowne campus at Camosun College.

The ‘Array of Hope’ solar project is being funded through a $97,000 USD grant from EBSCO Information Services with additional funding from the college.

This innovative project showcases around 90 photovoltaic panels, turning the lower southwest roof and walls into a dynamic, visible living lab. Complementing the installation is an interactive information kiosk in the libraries, providing an immersive solar learning experience for students and the local community.

“Students are at the heart of the ‘Array of Hope’, acting as a source of inspiration and momentum for the project,” says Shannon Craig, Manager of Sustainability Facilities Services. “This project emerged through darker times; despite or perhaps because of things like the pandemic and growing concerns about climate change, a new kind of agency, hopeful, and collaborative action sparked this project. It showcases practical solutions to the climate crisis and creates applied learning opportunities where our libraries continue to be a hub.”

With a goal to cover over 50 per cent of the library’s energy use, the project is expected to produce 46 MWh/year, significantly reducing Camosun’s carbon footprint. Construction preparation work started in February 2024 and the installation is slated for completion in fall 2024.

The ‘Array of Hope’ project aligns with Camosun Library’s core mission of social and environmental sustainability, reflecting the college’s dedication to practical solutions to the climate crisis. As the project takes shape, Camosun plans to expand various educational opportunities around solar power, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a sustainable future.

The two libraries at Camosun are at the forefront of embracing student learning and championing student success. Librarians, integral to this mission, play a pivotal role in educating students and the wider community about information literacy and sustainability, both within and beyond the classroom.
