NEW DEAN OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT JOINS OKANAGAN COLLEGE

KELOWNAOkanagan College has announced the appointment of Patrena Mackie as the new Dean of Health and Social Development. With over 17 years of experience in teaching and health care, Patrena brings extensive knowledge and leadership to the community. She holds a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Nursing.

Patrena Mackie joins Okanagan College from Bow Valley College, where she served as the Associate Dean of the School of Health and Wellness, Nursing portfolio. Throughout her career, she has focused on integrating technology into the curriculum and enhancing the learner experience. She is dedicated to supporting marginalized learners and reducing barriers in post-secondary education to ensure equitable access for all.

“I am honoured to join Okanagan College and look forward to collaborating with a dedicated team to create an inclusive, technologically advanced learning environment that supports all students,” said Mackie. “I am eager to work with the team at OC to encourage individuals in our region to explore the wide range of exciting health care programs available at the College and to pursue rewarding careers.”

Mackie holds multiple certificates in leadership, demonstrating her commitment to continuous professional development. She has made significant scholarly contributions to health care education, including work on the importance and impact of high-fidelity simulation and virtual reality in health care education.

I am confident that under her leadership, the Health and Social Development department will continue to thrive and grow,” said Samantha Lenci, OC’s Provost and Vice President Academic.

Okanagan College also acknowledges the significant contributions to the College’s health care programming made by Joanne Gibbons-Smyth, who has served as the Interim Dean of Health and Social Development since March. “Joanne’s leadership and dedication during this transitional period have been greatly appreciated. Her efforts have ensured the continued success and stability of the department,” said Lenci.

Patrena Mackie will officially join Okanagan College on September 9, 2024.
