WEST COAST – Hot on the heels of our Chamber of Commerce being awarded the successful bid to host the Tourism Vancouver Island Convention and AGM, we have just received word that our bid to host the BC Rural Communities Summit was also successful.
While the Tourism Vancouver Island dates are set for early October, we are still negotiating dates for the BC Rural Communities Summit, likely to be sometime in the first couple of weeks of April of 2017. We are thrilled to showcase our friendly, laid back, and beautiful community to all visitors, and see this as a great opportunity to showcase the uniqueness and diversity of what our area has to offer.
The West Coast communities came together under the umbrella of the Alberni Valley Employment Society to host a West Coast Jobs Fair, which we were happy to participate on behalf of our member employers. It was a great opportunity to connect with employers and employees alike. We look forward to hosting a similar event in our area of the region once again.
Spring Break, Whale Festival and Pacific Rim Artsplash arrived with a vengeance, with some crazy storm watching weather, along with the return of the whales. All events thus far have had amazingly positive feedback and the District of Ucluelet is proud to retrieve the “bone of contention” tug of war/whale, which will no doubt take pride of place in one of our favoured District venues.
The Food Bank on the Edge Society took the lead this year on the very popular Chowder Chow Down and saw more than 500 happy people fed, with both People’s and Judges choice going to Port Alberni’s Starboard Grill.
The Chamber Executive has been meeting weekly in an effort to strengthen the chamber presence and value, and have set some venues and speakers for upcoming luncheons and minglers. The board has recently held two strategic planning meetings and is setting pace for the year ahead.
