Highway 97 Cottonwood Hill Phase 2 Starts

QUESNEL– Work to improve safety and road stability on Highway 97 continues as the second phase of the Cottonwood Hill Project, part of the Cariboo Road Recovery Projects, begins this summer.

Enviro-ex Contracting Ltd. was awarded a $12.6-million contract to realign a section of Highway 97 at Cottonwood Hill 18 kilometres north of Quesnel and remove material from the top of the slide. This work, aimed to be completed by summer 2025, is part of a three-phase project to stabilize the road on the historic landslide site.

Alternate Approval Process for Aquatic Centre Upgrade

PRINCE GEORGE – The Alternate Approval Process (AAP) for the Aquatic Centre upgrade funding will remain open until August 9. At the council meeting on April 22, council approved funding for several improvements and upgrades to the Prince George Aquatic Centre. Phase one of the upgrades, budgeted at $14.88 million, has already secured funding.

Additional enhancements and repairs, approved on April 22, total $22.15 million. This funding would need to be borrowed using Municipal Finance Authority (MFA) debt funding, which requires approval from electors. This approval will be sought using the alternative approval process.

City Seeks to Increase Paid On-Call Firefighter Membership

WILLIAMS LAKE – The Williams Lake Fire Department is looking to bolster its ranks and is currently accepting applications for paid on-call firefighters to help provide a critical service to the community.

Deputy Fire Chief Brendan Foote encourages anyone who is motivated, physically fit and over the age of 19 to consider a future in firefighting.

Hunting Regulations for 2024-26 Released

BRITISH COLUMBIA – The Province has updated the 2024-2026 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis to sustainably manage B.C. wildlife, respect First Nations’ hunting rights and provide hunters with a diversity of recreational and economic opportunities.

SMITHERS – The Smithers District Chamber of Commerce has announced the appointment of Emily Klaassen as the new administrative Office Manager. With her extensive administrative experience, leadership skills, and creative mindset, Emily is poised to make significant contributions to the Chamber’s administrative operations, Visitor Centre and community outreach efforts.

Emily brings over four years of administrative expertise, coupled with a robust background in multitasking and leadership. In addition to her administrative prowess, Emily holds a bachelor’s degree in fine art + Design.
