BRITISH COLUMBIA – Looking back on five years of the British Columbia Construction Association’s (BCCA) Builders Code program is a chance to evaluate where we are as an industry, appreciate how far we’ve come, and understand how much work is left to do. Facing important workforce recruitment challenges, British Columbia’s construction industry must cast a wider net in order to attract and retain a more diverse workforce. We must continue to make the workplace more welcoming, and free of discrimination, harassment, and bullying. These are the core tenets of the Builders Code program, a key pillar of BCCA’s workforce development strategy which sets a standard code of conduct for workers in the construction industry, from the worksite to the boardroom.

Tools for a Successful Career in Construction
This self-directed course is designed to provide those who are new to the construction industry with insight, knowledge, and guidance in factors important to contributing to and maintaining an ‘Acceptable Workplace’ culture. Register for this new training here.

This self-directed course is designed to encourage a new mindset in construction culture, and provide insights into why it is important. You will learn practical tools to both implement and foster a workplace culture that champions the case for diversity, equity, and inclusion for the success of your business and a thriving construction industry. Virtual facilitator-led training is also available, covering such topics as psychological safety, the business benefits of a positive workplace culture, and effective leadership tools.
More than 1,000 industry leaders have completed Builders Code training courses as a way to improve their workplace culture. They agree that a respectful workplace culture is essential for the recruitment and retention of employees. Builders Code training is key to what must be an ongoing process, as we continue to challenge ourselves to break down the barriers that may discourage people from considering a career in construction.
Over 1800 employers have already signed the Builders Code Pledge for an Acceptable Worksite in support of the notion that inequity no longer has a place in our industry. We encourage construction industry employers across BC to join the growing list of Builders Code pledge signatories. Your commitment to a safe and welcoming work environment can be shared with employees on the worksite, and as part of the recruitment and onboarding processes.
