BRITISH COLUMBIA – Surerus Murphy Joint Venture constructs energy construction infrastructure projects throughout western Canada and is recognized in the industry for its commitment to hiring women in all operational areas.
“We employ women in all aspects of the business – from working as field leadership to laborers and in the office supporting construction, from procurement to engineering to data management and quality assurance and control,” notes Marketing & Communications Manager Michelle Harries. “We support women and are proud employers of some talented women working in our field.”
Surerus Murphy’s Canadian office is in Calgary, Alberta. It is a partnership between Surerus Pipeline Inc. of Fort St. John, BC and J. Murphy & Sons from the United Kingdom.
Surerus Murphy turns 10 in 2025. The organization builds pipelines and facilities for the energy industry, including green-energy projects with a focus on utility-scale solar installations. The partners recently acquired WHC Energy Services of Louisiana, another energy infrastructure construction firm.
Surerus Murphy successfully delivered a challenging section of the Coastal GasLink Project in northern B.C., on the Trans Mountain Expansion Project outside of Kamloops, and is currently working with Fortis BC on building part of the Eagle Mountain Woodfibre pipeline in Squamish.
“Women in construction can span the gamut of being in the field or in the office,” Michelle says, noting they have anywhere from 300 core to over 2,000 employees including field workers, depending on the number of projects underway. “We have several positions, and we support career growth.”
“Our organization offers a very dynamic, fun career path with a lot of opportunities where our employees can have different experiences.”
Surerus Murphy supports women in construction by offering opportunities within a strong workplace culture.
“One of the strengths is that we welcome diversity of opinion and skills, and that makes us stronger,” Michelle observes. “We hire the best person for the job, whether it be a woman or a man, it doesn’t matter. Everyone here has an equal opportunity to succeed.”
“We have mandatory respectful workplace training for our employees, and offer ongoing yearly training opportunities that pertain to the employee’s chosen field,” she adds. “The by-product of that is we tend to attract more women. We take a holistic approach and support people throughout their career span. This translates into our organization getting a significant number of women interested in working with us.”
Michelle explains that the company’s success has a lot to do with its core values.
“We’re a values-driven organization, and we have four core values: Never Harm, Trust, Integrity and Assured Delivery,” she says. “It’s interesting to observe how these values are encouraged and incorporated into every day work, and how they guide how we work together.”
“Working in an environment where values and inclusion are part of our everyday work, like it is here, is a major reason why I believe we are a contractor of choice. It is a big part of our success.”
